August is historically a quiet month, when investors rest up, catch up on projects and prepare for a final year-end push. Not this year, however, as August started with the biggest spike in #volatility all year. Marija Veitmane, head of equity research, shares findings from our monthly Institutional Investor Holdings and Risk Appetite Indicators. https://lnkd.in/e6a2jXD8

Financial markets were everything but flat in August as incoming data prompted significant re-assessments of the outlook and Fed policy. #Inflation, however, looks to have been remarkably normal. Our US PriceStats rose just over 5bps (NSA) on the month; in line with August averages seen over the past decade (7bps). This is marginally higher than the initial consensus estimate, which has a 5bps fall (nsa) and a 20bp mom rise (sa). For all the volatility in labor market data, inflation readings over the summer have been remarkably benign, normal and consistent with a green light for Fed easing. #STTInsights

August brought notable #Marketvolatility and then received a boost from the #FederalReserve’s dovish message in #JacksonHole. However, September is known for seasonal weakness and is kicking off with worries over global #economicgrowth and a question of whether anticipated monetary easing is enough to sustain gains in #bonds and #equities. With these challenges in mind, Marija Veitmane, our head of equity strategy, joins #STTStreetSignals to discuss optimal asset allocation strategies for the rest of 2024. https://lnkd.in/eyzDApRt

The triggering of the Sahm rule in July caused a significant (if only short-lived) market reaction. However, it is still seen as one of the reasons why markets are expecting an aggressive Fed easing cycle to come. Claudia Sahm has argued that her rule may be less relevant this time around, as the rise in the unemployment rate has been caused by increased labor supply rather than lay-offs. History would agree. Since 1980, the Sahm rule has been triggered six times and never has it occurred when payrolls growth is so robust. Three month payrolls is currently averaging 167k, by far the strongest job gains we have seen when Sahm is in play. #STTInsights
