New research from the Sentara Health Research Center and the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University (Eastern Virginia Medical School)may have life-saving implications for women. One thing many breast cancers share is a tendency to activate a protein known as SIAH. This new research has proven that the biomarker SIAH is a powerful tool for diagnosing and treating cancer. The initiative is supported by a $2.5 million grant from the Department of Defense and clinicians and scientists from Virginia Commonwealth University and George Mason University. Nurses, doctors, and Sentara colleagues tearfully joined Zack Pate's family and friends as they lined the hallways of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. This powerful expression of respect and dignity is known as an 'Honor Walk.' Organ donors and their loved ones are honored as they make the final journey from the ICU to the operating room, where Zack's heart was donated to save the life of another. Zack, 29, lived with mental illness for much of his life, and HIV for a decade. His heart was donated to a recipient with HIV through the HOPE Act. Zack’s heart donation is only the third HIV-positive heart donation in the country. His donation speaks volumes to the strides we are making in healthcare for the HIV community, and nationwide. We share our condolences with Zack's family and loved ones, and know his generous donation will touch many lives.
