I am proud of the work that we did at Renewably to complete this GHG inventory for the University of Montana. Here are a few thoughts beyond the headline: 1. We expected to see a rise in Scope 3 as campus travel returns to pre-pandemic levels. This emissions increase did not come from Scopes 1+2 (operations, energy). Scopes 1 +2 combined will continue to decrease with the implementation of campus Combined Heat and Power. 2. The emissions increase represents a far more accurate picture of commuting choices, as this inventory for FY21-23 uses new commuter data. Going forward we should see this flatten and decrease with this evolving methodology. UM has already taken steps to encourage more carpooling and other forms of transportation. 3. I hope the University of Montana uses this information to evaluate air travel choices and opportunities for further investment in campus emissions reductions. 4. I applaud the University’s commitment to measuring and reporting emissions. It is only by investing in the process of rigorous data collection and accurate reporting that areas for improvement can be identified. Thank you to Eva Rocke for your dedication to this ongoing and challenging process.
