About us
Now in its sixth decade of practice, Olson Kundig is a collaborative design practice led by 12 principal/owners whose work includes cultural and museum projects, exhibition design, commercial and mixed-use design (including wineries and sports facilities), private and multi-family residential, hospitality projects, places of worship, interior design, product design and landscape design. With deep roots in the Pacific Northwest, the firm and its team of over 300 work with clients around the world. The firm began its creative existence in 1966 with the architect Jim Olson, whose work at that time centered on explorations of the relationship between dwellings and the landscapes in which they inhabit. Olson started the firm based on the essential ideas that buildings can serve as a bridge between nature, culture, histories, and people, and that inspiring surroundings have a positive effect on people’s lives. Among the firm’s accolades are the 2009 National AIA Architecture Firm Award (as Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects), national and regional design awards from the American Institute of Architects, Jim Olson’s 2007 Seattle Medal of Honor and Tom Kundig’s National Design Award from the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt and his Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Books on the firm’s work include Tom Kundig: Working Title (Princeton Architectural Press, 2020); Jim Olson: Building • Nature • Art (Thames & Hudson, 2018); Tom Kundig: Works (Princeton Architectural Press, 2015); Jim Olson: Art and Architecture (August Editions, 2013); Tom Kundig: Houses 2 (Princeton Architectural Press, 2011); Jim Olson Houses (The Monacelli Press, 2009); and Tom Kundig: Houses (Princeton Architectural Press, originally published in 2006 and re-released in 2021).

What if you were swallowed by a whale? "Between Baleen" is a fully immersive sensory installation for Seattle Design Festival that explores the humbling scale of ocean life, honoring the ecosystem of our local waters. Experience the dense screen of rope and extruded film that simulates whale baleen, and feel the weight of hung rope as if engulfed in the mouth of a whale. Visit Between Baleen at Lake Union Park on August 17-18. In collaboration with Net Your Problem LLC and Western Washington University's Polymer Materials Engineering program, this installation uses recycled ocean plastics and will be repurposed again to achieve zero-footprint impact. Between Baleen is a unique opportunity to be immersed in ocean life of the Pacific Northwest, while highlighting the efforts of organizations that recycle and repurpose ocean plastics in partnership with the fishing industry. We’re pleased to share that 100 Congress, a revitalized office tower lobby led by design principal Kirsten Ring Murray FAIA, has been featured online by The Architect's Newspaper! “At 100 Congress, our fundamental driver was to make the space feel right from a scale perspective. The existing lobby was large and somewhat amorphous, so we placed furniture like coffee bar in the center and added a low lantern to create a more intimate scale,” Kirsten shares. “Comfortable, functional seating groups also provide more intimate experiences with a connection to the garden outside. It’s a great green space and an unusual asset for an urban building.” Visit The Architect’s Newspaper link below to read the full story! https://lnkd.in/gQ-cxyua #Architecture #Design #InteriorDesign Project Team: Kirsten Ring Murray, FAIA, Design Principal; Jerry Garcia, Principal; Todd Walbourn, AIA, LEED AP, Project Manager; Matt Hostetler, AIA, LEED AP, Project Architect; Collin Palin, AIA, and Conor Denison, Architectural Staff; Francesca Dea Krisli and Stella Bok, Interior Design Staff Client/Developer: Carr Properties Key Consultants: rand* construction corporation, General Contractor; Datum Engineers, Structural Engineer; Glumac, Mechanical & Electrical Engineer; Design Workshop, Landscape Architect; Archillume, Lighting Design; Applied Building Information, Specifications

The two-story steel tower is mounted on a 15-foot-gauge railroad track and transitions from nested extension of the home to a detached work space.
