“Hezbollah is in a trap of its own making. Having tied their confrontation with Israel to the ongoing war on Gaza limits their options to de-escalate. This attack makes it even harder for them to do so.” - MEI's Randa Slim to The New York Times https://lnkd.in/eruwEawe

Increasing knowledge of the Middle East among US citizens & promoting understanding between the two regions.
About us
Founded in 1946, the Middle East Institute (MEI) is the oldest Washington, DC-based institution dedicated exclusively to the study of the Middle East. Its founders, scholar George Camp Keiser and former US Secretary of State Christian Herter laid out a simple mandate: “to increase knowledge of the Middle East among the citizens of the United States and to promote a better understanding between the people of these two areas.” MEI is a respected, non-partisan voice in the field of Middle East studies.

The Middle East Institute (MEI) Arts and Culture Center hosted leading gender studies experts from United States Institute of Peace, Atlantic Council , The Wilson Center and Vital Voices Global Partnership for an in-person panel conversation and networking event on September 16th, a date that marks the second-year anniversary of the killing in detention of the 22-year old Iranian Mahsa Amini. The discussion explored the rise of women changemakers in the Arab world and Iran and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Our audience heard from leading scholars who have worked to support and invest in women changemakers both in the Middle East and globally. Watch the full discussion here: https://lnkd.in/eGthfYNH The program comes out of MEI’s current photography exhibition Louder Than Hearts. Panelists discussed pathways to success; the role that women play in social change and peacebuilding; and the challenges and pressures they are up against in the face of repressive regimes, economic instability, conflict and entrenched patriarchies. Thanks to Nadereh Chamlou, Saba Ghori, Merissa Khurma, Kathleen Kuehnast, & Suzanne Kianpour for making the evening a success.

War alone wont see Israel succeed in returning its people to the north. And Hezbollah’s campaign in support of Hamas has yielded poor returns. Its time to decouple Lebanon from Gaza & take the diplomatic offramp. The fate of Lebanon shouldn’t be in the hands of Sinwar & Netanyahu. BBC News

At least nine people are dead and 2,750 are wounded following the detonation of hundreds of pagers in Lebanon on September 17th. Lebanese government officials and Hezbollah have blamed the Israeli military for the attack, while Israel has not commented on the incident. MEI's scholars respond to the news and how the attack could impact Israel-Hezbollah tensions.

The clock is close to striking midnight and it is time for Hezbollah to decouple Lebanon from the Israeli- Gaza war. The alternative options are stark. Here’s why CNN 👇

"The announcement of a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq in two years’ time will boost the Islamic State’s confidence significantly. As troops begin to draw down, the terrorist group will unquestionably seek to step into the resulting vacuum," write MEI's Gen.
