What do developers want from AI? The JetBrains research team has recently published a pre-print of a study about how developers want to use AI. Here are the highlights of the study: Developers like to code, unsurprisingly. They don’t want to delegate implementing new features to AI assistants completely. They just want some assistance and to stay in control. Developers are not fond of writing natural language artifacts (comments, READMEs, commit messages, etc). They would be more likely to delegate these tasks to AI assistants. Developers consider AI-generated code mostly usable and somewhat correct, but security is a big concern. With the rapid rise of AI coding assistants, it’s crucial that large language models (LMMs) align with developers’ perceptions of readable code. But do developers themselves have a consensus on code readability? Code readability is usually defined as a subjective human judgment of how easy the code is to understand. Our previous research revealed a low consensus among developers on code readability, highlighting a need for further investigation in this area. For this paper, our research team surveyed Java developers from JetBrains with similar coding backgrounds who worked on the same codebase to evaluate their opinions on code readability. The bottom line is that a consensus on code readability can be found among developers from the same company or project. This means that LLM outputs can be aligned with users' notions of code readability, but this alignment is only achievable within a specific company or among developers with similar coding backgrounds. The study found that the two aspects most commonly associated with readable code are its conciseness and a clear goal. Those aspects can be used as guidance for tuning LLMs. What do you do to improve code readability? Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/de5G68Mg

Getting that release out in time may seem like a must, but the long-term negative effects of burnout on your team may be far more serious than a missed deadline. 29% of developers work on weekends, according to the Developer Ecosystem survey conducted by JetBrains. The report also shows that more than two-thirds of developers experienced burnout. Numerous research findings suggest that workplace burnout has consequences, both personal (insomnia, depression, psychological distress) and organizational (reduced job performance, absenteeism).
