The global community has been talking about children being left behind in the #AIDS response for years. We are seeing strong political commitment to this agenda through the #GlobalAllianceEndAIDS. This is promising! However children continue to die needlessly when we have the tools to save them. It’s time to put our money where our mouth is and fund the scale-up of these existing tools. Breastfeeding provides essential and irreplaceable nutrition for a child's growth, development, and survival. Since 2021, the Ministry of Health, Zambia, with support from the Swedish government and CHAI, has been implementing the Baby Friendly Health Facility Initiative (BFHFI) in the Eastern and Southern provinces. The BFHFI, under the PeaCe project, aims to improve the quality of support given to new mothers and, ultimately, strengthen breastfeeding among mothers. Since its inception, the program has trained 224 healthcare workers, including clinicians, midwives, environmental health technicians, nutritionists, and community-based volunteers, on best breastfeeding practices. In addition, there has been an 18 percent increase in the number of health facilities with at least one staff member trained in BFHFI. During this period, over 401,200 infants (89%) have been breastfed within the first hour of birth per World Health Organization recommendations. As last week’s conference in Munich wraps, here are some of the numbers that caught our attention at #AIDS2024: 1. 86% of children who die from AIDS complications each year are from sub-Saharan Africa according to a recent UNICEF report: https://ow.ly/LQWn50SPocq 2. Lenacapavir, a twice-yearly injection of HIV prevention medication, has proved 100% effective in cisgender women according to early trial results released in June this year 3. People living with HIV who live in countries with civil society policies are twice as likely to know their status. This is according to a legal and policy review for 194 countries from 2017 to 2023. https://ow.ly/swLA50SPocs Read all the numbers in our recap blog: https://ow.ly/KLPe50SPoct

Extreme weather events such as floods and extreme heat pose life-threatening dangers to pregnant women, new mothers, and their children. This is why CHAI and the South African National Health Department are working on a project that will send warnings about dangerous climate-driven weather events to pregnant women and mothers of young children. The project will leverage the existing departmental maternal health messaging service, MomConnect. Over 420,000 women are estimated to be on the app, which provides antenatal health, breastfeeding, and childhood immunization information. Funded by USAID, CHAI, under the EpiC Project, conducted a comprehensive assessment of oxygen availability in #Namibia between March 2023 and March 2024. The project conducted on-site assessments of 18 health facilities, quantification analysis of medical oxygen needs in 28 health facilities to assess their current and potential oxygen systems and produced a comprehensive report documenting the current situation and investment options for improving oxygen supply. The assessment concluded that the local production of LOX is crucial for affordability and economic viability and that optimizing existing PSA operations and medical piping systems are also essential for overall sustainability.
