We're proud to see one of our Cleveland Clinic Canada sports medicine physicians Dr. John Philpott at the Paris Olympics! Dr. Philpott is team doctor for Canada’s Senior Men’s Basketball Team. Being selected to be a team doctor can be an Olympic event in itself. It may take years to qualify and the process can be highly competitive. Team physicians are ultimately chosen for experience, appropriate certification and personality — the ability to be a team player. “These players require healthy balanced food and lots of it. Typically, there are three meals a day and snacks, but food is available all day,” says Dr. Philpott. Fluids are carefully planned to match players’ activity demands, before, during and after games and practices. Dr. Philpott travels everywhere with the Olympic hopefuls, along with a multi-disciplinary care team. “I believe being embedded with the team over years really helps build trust and foster their success,” he says. “They know I am always available to them, even when our competition is over and they have returned to their respective professional teams.” Dr. Philpott is one key member of the integrated support team — made up of athletic therapists, a mental health performance coach, a strength and conditioning coach and a nutritionist — that works together to keep players healthy and safe, on and off the court. Besides preventing issues, Dr. Philpott focuses on responding to any type of injury the players may have, such as joint sprains, muscle strains, fractures or concussions. He, along with the players and staff of the Canada men’s national basketball team have been in Paris since mid-July. It’s been more than two decades since the team has hit the Olympic court. “This position is special to me as it allows me to practice sports medicine within a sport I love with wonderfully talented players and staff. ” says Dr. Philpott.
