Amelia Schubach, Alumni, Global BEST, London 🎒 “Just over 2 years ago, I left Australia with one backpack. I was a lawyer back then. It’s astonishing how much can change in such a short time if you invest in self-reflection and evolution. ⌚ I grew up in a mixed Asian-Australian household, moving from city to city across the globe. I learned early on that the best way to integrate as a newcomer or foreigner was to bring value or contribute in some way. With a kaleidoscope of Asian influences, I inherited an immigrant mindset that emphasized constant productivity and the pursuit of prestigious, future-proofing goals. Being a corporate lawyer fulfilled the ‘ask’ but also exacerbated this mindset, particularly when reducing one’s value to 6-minute billing increments. 🎹 At the same time, I was taught weaknesses required dedication to overcome. It meant going over the same tricky runs in piano rehearsal or revising only incorrect answers in practice math papers. Against that backdrop, my self-value was entirely derived from socially ascribed concepts of successful output, while any deficiencies were a real personal failing. ⛰️ What I’ve since learnt, from my time #atBain working in wellbeing and building a life in London, is that you’re not defined by these things. It’s your natural curiosities, intrinsic motivators, and unique strengths that matter. This mindset shift has enabled me to redefine my self-value and given me the conviction to chase lofty dreams. From interviewing the former Global Managing Partner for Bain’s inaugural C-suite discussion on mental health and being named the UK’s Future Leader in Mental Health, to climbing Everest Base Camp with my brother and now starting a Masters of Public Health at Harvard University. 🌎 I want nothing more than for others to experience the luxury of redefining themselves too, and to reach the calm shores of genuine assuredness and self-trust. Because the view from here is spectacular - a beautiful world full of possibility.”

Sinead Mullen, Partner, Denver "It was 2015 and my manager year #atBain. I was working a lot and not taking care of myself—not eating well, not creating space to work out, not prioritizing sleep, no vacations. I was drained. Truthfully, I was at breaking point. I needed to pause and reset. I started Googling “good solo trips for women”. This is when I found MountainTrek—a retreat in British Columbia where you live in a lodge for a week and do yoga, hike, eat healthy, meditate, have massages. I had no idea what I was signing up for, but I took the plunge and went by myself. It changed my life. To clarify, I didn’t return from MountainTrek a new person with completely new habits. Behavior change is really hard and takes time. However, it did foster a newfound intentionality around wellness. Wellness is such a broad concept so it’s important to define it for yourself. Mine is anchored in the idea of having the energy and strength (physically and mentally) to live the life I want to live. More recently, I have found myself shifting from a short-term vision of wellness to think more about longevity, in particular maintaining independence and quality of life. To be my best, I am clear about what my non-negotiables are and how I am prioritizing them. Everyone I work with knows I prioritize 8-hours of sleep each night. Right now, I am working on finding ways to create more movement throughout my day, even simple things like going for a 20-minute walk after dinner can be so impactful to your overall heath. My advice is to start with one thing that feels manageable for where you are in your career and proactively communicate it to your team. I also love the power of visualization. I do this every year by creating a vision board. This helps me get clear on what makes me individually happy and healthy. I encourage others to do the same—to share their goals and pursue them openly. I have been to MountainTrek every year since 2015, bar Covid, even taking fellow Bainies for a few of those years! It reminds me of the importance of prioritizing health, happiness, growth and, of course, adventure."
