Audiomack is a youth-driven, artist-first music streaming platform that allows creators to share unlimited music and podcast content for free, along with tools to help them expand their audiences. Focused on emerging artists and scenes — hip-hop, electronic, Latin, reggae, Afrobeats, and other top and emerging genres — Audiomack has played a pivotal role in the careers of some of today’s most popular artists. Notable releases exclusive to or premiered on Audiomack includes Chance the Rapper’s seminal 'Acid Rap' mixtape, J. Cole’s fabled 'Truly Yours' series, Eminem’s eviscerating Machine Gun Kelly diss track “KILLSHOT,” and a series of freestyles from Nicki Minaj.     Over 5+ years at Audiomack, the most common complaint I’ve heard about the app from users is the annoyance of interruptive ads. This is a tough one: on one hand, I understand. Having your listening experience interrupted by an audio or interstitial ad is jarring and unpleasant. Of course listeners would rather not be interrupted! On the other, having an ad-supported free tier is how Audiomack provides playback to listeners everywhere in the world, including the enormous number of people - many of whom are our core users - who don’t have the cash to pay for subscription products. Those users deserve a world-class music app too, just as the artists they listen to deserve to monetize that listening. During a research intensive earlier this year, David Ponte posited that the problem is less ads than it is the interruptions themselves. Dave Edwards and Dave Macli had long proposed the idea of creating a self-serve ads system to unlock stretches of uninterrupted listening time, and now seemed like the chance to try it out. Now, on the latest versions of your Audiomack app, you’ll find a new header button that allows free users to stack and bank chunks of ad-free listening time after watching interstitial ads when they want. Listeners can watch multiple rewarded ads in sequence to save up long periods of time they’re sure won’t be interrupted by ads. This means Audiomack is clocking revenue for artists, while helping listeners have smoother listening sessions. Our goal is create the most enjoyable listening experience while generating the most value for artists. This means helping users with lots of spending power use it on features like Supporters and Premiere Access, but also making the best listening experience for users with low spending power but other opportunities for unlocking value. Flexible models work better for everyone. Special thanks also to Thomas Klinger and Christopher Dalla Riva, who helped bring this idea to fruition.
