Last week, Ancestry was a proud sponsor of the 2024 National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Convention. Moderated by theGrio reporter and author Natasha S. Alford, panelists Nicka Sewell-Smith (Ancestry), Nikole Hannah-Jones (New York Times Magazine, The 1619 Project) and Keyaira K. (ELLE Magazine, Refinery29 Unbothered) explored how to harness the richness of historical record collections to craft inclusive and factual storytelling. Reflecting on the importance thorough research had in the completion of her Pulitzer-prize winning The 1619 Project, Nikole Hannah-Jones shared, “Access to records on Ancestry demystifies that we are people with an untraceable past…If you don’t have access to those documents you are relying on someone else to tell their version of your story for you. Now YOU have the power to find and tell your story.” Read more about the session here →

Last week we hosted Ancestry’s fourth annual Global Day of Service - a day dedicated to stepping away from work and supporting the communities where we live and work. More than 200 colleagues and their families came together in-person and virtually around the world to make a difference. Together we: - Packed more than 240 backpacks with school supplies for Boys & Girls Clubs of America of Utah County - Built 60 musical instruments to support youth with developmental disabilities - Captured more than 1,000 photographs and GPS coordinates of headstones and memorials with Find A Grave. By capturing and making this information available for free, we help families seeking information to find where their ancestors and loved ones were laid to rest. #Volunteering - it’s in our DNA. #WeAreAncestry

Meet our Employees who are Making History - Dana Chinnici, Director of US Consumer PR What I do at Ancestry: I develop and execute strategic communications campaigns and oversee consumer media relations strategies. In my nearly 5 years at Ancestry, I have had the opportunity to work on some very fun projects, including revealing to Tom Hanks that he’s related to Fred Rogers ahead of “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”, NSYNC’s Lance Bass learning childhood friend Britney Spears is his cousin, and more recently, Rob Lowe discovering he’s a real life Chris Trager from “Parks & Rec” according to his DNA Traits (he’s most likely to be a sprinter and competitive!). What I love about my job: We do culturally-relevant and unique storytelling that breaks through the clutter – it’s what makes Ancestry so special. Just like there is always more to discover in your personal family history, there are always more stories to be told. What’s your “Family Thing”: Coming from a big Italian family, my “family thing” is an annual tradition we call “Sauce Day". Every summer, we dedicate one day to making jars of homemade tomato sauce that last us through the year. #WeAreAncestry #WeAreTheCurious
