Your Morning Brief of Global Events (8/7) 👇🏼 ▪ Further anti-Muslim riots are anticipated in the #UK as far-right groups plan to target asylum centers and immigration law firms. This follows rising violence after the fatal stabbing of three girls in northwest Britain. Anti-fascist protesters will likely stage counterdemonstrations. Prime Minister #KeirStarmer warned rioters of severe jail terms, emphasizing community safety. The government deployed 6,000 specialist officers to manage the unrest, with over 400 arrests made already.    ▪ #Hamas named Yahya Sinwar as its new overall chief, succeeding Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in #Tehran last week. The decision likely signals a more hardline stance amidst rising Middle Eastern tensions. #Sinwar, considered one of Hamas' most extreme figures, is wanted by Israel for his role in the October 2023 attacks. He is expected to complicate ceasefire and hostage negotiations.    ▪ Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus will lead #Bangladesh's interim government after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled amid a mass uprising. The decision was announced by Joynal Abedin, the press secretary to President Mohammed Shahabuddin. The interim government, expected to conduct elections soon, will include civil society and student representatives. Yunus is set to return to Dhaka on Thursday after a medical procedure in Paris.    ▪ #Thailand's Constitutional Court dissolved the progressive Move Forward Party on Wednesday, citing a constitutional violation for proposing to amend the law against defaming the monarchy. The court's unanimous decision deemed the campaign an attempt to overthrow the constitutional monarchy. The ruling imposes a 10-year political activity ban on party executives, including former leader Pita Limjaroenrat and current chief Chaithawat Tulathon.    ▪ The Philippines, Canada, United States, and Australia began their first joint military exercise in the South China Sea to improve inter-operability among forces. The two-day exercise involves naval and air force units operating in Manila's exclusive economic zone amid ongoing territorial disputes in the region. China conducted a joint combat patrol near the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, according to the Southern Theatre Command. ▪ At the #Olympics, open water swimmers were cleared to train in the #Seine River today after #Paris organizers deemed it safe. Training was previously canceled due to fluctuating bacteria levels, but recent weather has improved water quality. Many athletes might skip the session due to bacteria concerns, opting to swim only during the actual events. Backup plans are in place to move the races to Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium if necessary. Thanks for reading and sharing! Will be back tomorrow morning with more global updates. 🌍

Here are a few events to be aware of today (8/6), courtesy of our Global Intelligence Team: 🔎 ▪ US Vice President Kamala #Harris has selected Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota as her running mate. The decision is crucial as Harris prepares to challenge Republican candidates Donald #Trump and J.D. Vance in the upcoming #election.     ▪ At least five US personnel were injured in an attack on the al Asad airbase in Iraq, following a recent escalation of tensions in the #MiddleEast. The attack involved two Katyusha rockets, with one seriously injuring a US service member. This incident comes amid fears of retaliatory strikes by Iran and its allies after the killing of senior figures from #Hamas and Hezbollah.    ▪ Western intelligence sources suggest that Iran and #Hezbollah plan to launch a retaliatory strike against Israel on Tisha B'Av, a significant Jewish day of mourning, which falls on August 12-13 this year. The timing appears chosen for its potential to evoke historical traumas and signal Israel's vulnerability. Sources compare this strategy to the surprise attack on #Israel during Yom Kippur in 1973, implying the potential for increased chaos and lowered defenses on a religiously significant day.    ▪ Eight Palestinians were killed during ongoing Israeli military raids in the West Bank, according to Palestinian authorities. Lebanese officials announced on Tuesday that an Israeli airstrike in Southern #Lebanon killed four people, leading to a retaliatory drone attack by Hezbollah on Northern Israel, injuring two. Efforts by Egypt and Turkey to prevent a broader regional war continue, as Israel faces what it calls a "multi-front war" with #Iran and its allies.    ▪ UK Prime Minister Keir #Starmer announced plans to establish a specialized police force to handle riots and strengthen the justice system to address the recent surge in arrests. Violent demonstrations continued overnight with significant clashes, injuries and arrests in Plymouth, #Belfast and Darlington. Over 375 arrests have been made since the beginning of the violent #protests. Starmer criticized social media platforms for not curbing the spread of harmful disinformation, which he claims has exacerbated the unrest.    ▪ #Bangladesh's parliament was dissolved following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and departure from the country amid violent protests calling for her removal. The dissolution came after student leaders set a deadline for action and threatened further unrest if their demands were not met. The political crisis has led to significant instability in the country. Feel free to share this morning brief w/ your network + follow for daily updates.
