Primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a condition where a dog’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys its own platelets. This small blood cell helps stop bleeding. Surprisingly, dogs with ITP have low levels of the hormone that stimulates the body to make more platelets. Researchers are looking into this finding to find better treatment options. Attention dog breeders and anyone importing dogs into the US - the Society for Theriogenology and American College of Theriogenologists have updated their recommendations for Brucellosis testing in dogs: - All breeding dogs should be tested. - All dogs and dog semen imported into the US should be tested. - National reporting requirements are needed. - Large-scale testing of mixed breed spayed and neutered dogs should occur to determine the actual prevalence of Brucellosis in this population.
