You're hesitant about strategic partnerships. How can you see the value in collaboration as a founder?

As a founder, it's important to consider that strategic partnerships can offer a unique opportunity to access complementary resources and capabilities that your startup might lack. This could involve partnering with a larger company to leverage their established distribution network, collaborating with a research institution to gain access to cutting-edge technology, or teaming up with a marketing agency to enhance brand visibility. By strategically identifying and partnering with organizations that complement your strengths and weaknesses, you can accelerate your startup's growth and create a more competitive position in the market.

Having the experiences in both the startup and corporate innovation sides, strategic partnership is very important to both parties, but it is often difficult to do it right. From the startup side, having a partnership/collaboration with a large corporate means: 1. There is a potential market demand. 2. The solution is de-risked by this collaboration. 3. Market validation. For the corporate side, it means: 1. Access to novel technology. 2. Faster innovation which complements internal R&D. 3. Potential investment/acquisition candidate. However, the triaging of the partners can be difficult and lengthy to find the ideal partner.

Once bitten, twice shy. There is a growing lack of respect within business communities globally. The growing trend toward non-adherence to terms of service and an automatic assumption that paying late will be overlooked or failures to abide by the conditions of the service provider is weakening what traditionally has always been a productive working relationship. It’s all very well tightening one’s terms and conditions but unless the client is respectful both of your offer as well as their own professional prescribes, there will always be the risk of abuse. Be hard when necessary and in the sales process try to include the need for a “two-way street” if the assignment or project is to be successful and mutually fruitful.

There is so much each party can learn from the strategic partnership. Corporates can learn about how startups innovate and what areas are emerging and gaining traction. Startups can learn about real market demand and how a technology gets commercialized. For peers, they can learn the best practices from each other and improve themselves.

Things worth doing formally, are worth doing informally first. Before structuring partnerships that are complicated to undo, interrogate what things can only be accomplished through a formal strategic partnership in an effort to discover whether formalizing an effort is necessary because of its substance. Performative partnerships without incremental substance generally don’t generate long-term ROI.

Ultimately, the success or failure of a contract depends on communication. From start, throughout and to finish. All too often a deal is broken or a sale lost when the contractor abuses the enthusiasm of the contractee. The days of honour, trust and gentlemanly cooperation are long gone. Sadly. We therefore must relay on Terms of Service that clearly define the obligations on BOTH parties AND the consequences of non-performance by EITHER of those parties. For far too long (to my shame and financial loses) I have trusted my partners or clients. It hurts, but the reality is you can NOT trust them until, at the least, a contract has been successfully executed and the client has paid - in full, on time and without dispute.
