First conduct a need assessment to identify skill gaps. Based on the insights and data need to set clear goals, and encourage them regular debrief process. Through that as a leader we can support team members for continuous professional development.

If your team is lacking critical skills, there are several questions that come to mind: 1. Is this an entry level job? 2. Have they been properly trained? 3. If it is not an entry level job, reassess your interviewing and hiring standards. 4. Being that it is your team, you have a responsibility to lead by example, have the critical skills yourself, and have leadership skills. If nobody is following, you are not leading. Without more specifics in the scenario, it is all speculation.

My team is highly important to me and the person who seeks help to improve his skills is my favorite. I support them fully by providing them focused training that could help him / her rapidly. I appreciate every little effort and achievement of my team to boost their confidence.

As a leader and teammate of your organization, it’s your job to ensure your team both has resources and knows how best to access and utilize them. All too often, a one-size fits all resource is put into place that’s meant to “solve” the issue. While well-intentioned, it doesn’t work and the team is then pushed toward something different. Modeling the use of the resources and talking about them in everyday conversation, will help to ensure the team sees the need for a deep-dive. Lastly, being open to hearing if something isn’t working is critical. Don’t fall in love with the resources you’ve provided - don’t sign long contracts. Bring the team on board for demos and follow through to make changes if the desired outcome isn’t being met.

A very nice and immersive experience was applied before was suggesting a number of topics and each of the team members would choose the topic they prefer most, they would research it and prepare a session of information exchange with the rest of the team. This experience was very exciting as it had many benefits like; team building and collaboration, enhancing presentation skills, knowledge and experience sharing and bonding. There once was a direct report who was struggling terribly. In an effort to encourage her growth, her manager decided to take some online classes with her so they could learn together. It did not matter that the manager was an expert in this field of study. The manager believed that he could also learn something new and wanted his direct report to succeed. What ended up happening is, through the conversations about what they were learning about, BOTH the direct report and manager grew their relationship, the direct report began to contribute at a whole new level, and the manager was able to infuse new life into his whole team because of the collaboration on this one online course that drove new knowledge and skills for them all.
