What do you do if your performance goals in computer science don't align with your organization's objectives?

Maybe it's just me, but I'm unsure how this question in any way relates to computer science rather than just business in general?

-Understand the Misalignment: Take the time to thoroughly understand your organization's objectives and how they differ from your performance goals. -Communicate with your Manager and seek Clarification regarding organization's priorities and the rationale behind them. -If possible, propose adjustments to your performance goals that align better with the organization's objectives. -Focus on Impact: Regardless of the specific goals, prioritize activities and projects that have a tangible impact on the organization's objectives. -Monitor Progress: Regularly monitor your progress towards your adjusted goals and solicit feedback from your manager and colleagues.

Oftentimes, if my goals are aligned with the organization, it's by complete happenstance. Also, my goals may or may not even be related to Computer Science. I find myself prioritizing soft skill improvements over Computer Science ones because I will inherently improve at my field through technical curiosity. In other words, my goals are rarely, "get better at Rust", and more often, "improve at not speaking down to others when discussing a topic you view as trivial", for example.

When you detect a misalignment between your performance objectives and the organization's overarching goals, it's paramount to dissect the specifics of this incongruity. Evaluate whether your goals lean towards greater ambition or if they diverge in terms of technologies or methodologies. This comprehension of the mismatch's nature is pivotal. Armed with clarity, embark on rectifying the issue with strategic precision, eschewing frustration or conjecture. By adopting an informed approach, you pave the way for effective resolution and alignment between individual and organizational aspirations.

Having pinpointed the misalignment, it's crucial to communicate your concerns and objectives to your superiors. Engaging in open dialogue can foster mutual understanding and potentially lead to a realignment of objectives that benefits both parties. Present your case clearly, emphasizing how your goals align with and contribute to the organization's success. Strive to find common ground and work collaboratively towards a solution that respects both your aspirations and the company's direction. Effective communication and compromise can pave the way for a harmonious resolution.

I would be questioning the company to see why your goals are misaligned, is it a case that the company are continuously changing them? Identify whether it's them continuously moving the goal post or whether you need to make changes.

I think the major solution is Initiate a conversation with your manager to discuss the misalignment openly, that will helps more. Seek clarification on organization goals. Explore and discuss how these objectives can be related to your own goals and responsibilities. Allow time for this process to unfold, but If the misalignment persists and affects your career growth or job satisfaction, consider exploring other opportunities that better match your professional aspirations.

Rather than goals and objectives aligning, I'd check if my values align with the company first. Then proceed with checking other things

Remember that it's okay for you to not have the same values as a company, and if that's the case it may be time to consider elsewhere. You aren't always going to be the perfect fit for a company.

Goal setting isn't aligned to computer science, I feel like this article is applicable to much more than just tech, and is regarding business in general.
