My go to was to ask, what did they want to see, why they want to see that, how they would know it when they saw it... then I did that. This works 4 fold: 1) They know I am nterested 2) They know what to look for 3) I can check for alignment 4) We build trust that I can do what is asked.

When we have conversations with healthy and full communication, it gives us an opportunity to state clearly our expectations/desire for the promotion. As well as ask the necessary questions related to the promotion.

Your performance review shouldn't be the first and only time your leader hears about your learning goals. Before you start the class or the project, decide how you'll keep it top of mind with your manager. Perhaps it's part of a weekly team digest you share, maybe casually you drop an experience or learning into 1:1s or you can use a larger communication channel like slack or teams to share consistent, bite-sized learnings. Whichever path you choose, remember that your manager has so much going on that they will forget. Reminding them from time to time is not annoying, it's keeping your progress top of mind for them. It also makes performance review time much easier for both of you.

Lifelong learning is about the journey and not the destination. The purpose is to enjoy expanding your horizons, learning new cool stuff, and implementing it in your life. You need to love - this is how you become a continuous learner. Your related learning achievement should be shared and celebrated at your workplace. Eternal learners often inspire others to step on this path of continuous improvement.

A mentor years ago told me to create a 'brag book' folder, where I could store career related achievements, awards, feedback, etc. One of the hardest things to do is to talk about how great you are! The 'brag book' makes it easier to show tangible proof of your greatness!

While we expect higher ups in the office to see our effort, sometimes they don't. Or they do and still won't offer the promotion. So consider this approach, show the initiative, step up in ways you know are viable for the promotion, and then ask. If the answer is no, ask why. This way you can gage whether to continue your efforts or cut your loses and seek promotion outside of the organization if it's feasible.
