How would you handle including relevant volunteer work experiences on your resume?

Volunteer work, board membership, and charitable organizations are all great additions to your story. They give a *why* behind your *work* and *purpose*. When you list them, remember to include a statement on the overall involvement if it's not obvious or a well-known organization and list any contributions that you may be able to share to that cause.

I believe any volunteer work is a plus on your resume, if you are able to do something relevant to your role that's is a bonus but not essential. Having outside interests and motivations is a great showcase of strong character and I've always found it to be a benefit. Add it all in it's own section and/or in gaps on your resume

Volunteer work can add a lot to a resume for a recent grad and younger career individuals. Expanding your resume with meaningful volunteer experience can show a candidate is willing to put in the time and effort and says a lot about their character.

Including voluntary work on a CV gives an opportunity to further demonstrate your skills, knowledge, experience and achievements that are relevant to the job being applied for. It also shows your character and level of commitment with regards to your CPD. This is even more important if you are not currently in paid employment as you have something recent and relevant to promote in the ‘Work Experience’ section on your CV. Voluntary work says something about, and provides evidence for, your personal qualities and competences and so you should show what you have learned from the experience. By having had the opportunity to ‘try before you buy’ you can write with authority about why you want the job and why you are particularly suited to it.

To be clear: Employers aren't concerned with whether you were paid for the experience you have - they care about the substance of that experience. Understanding this can often help you determine the best place within your resume to place your volunteer experience.

The inclination for volunteering truly emanates from kind hearts, regardless of time spent on the activity. Charitable deeds are commendable in all age groups and cases. Whenever you can, give what you have: time, money, thought, or whatever to make a difference, and pray for this horrible world to be a better place!
