How do you handle clients who are resistant to networking as part of their job search timeline?

I would first seek to understand their specific concerns or misconceptions about networking. I would explain the benefits of networking, such as gaining valuable insights, uncovering hidden job opportunities, and building professional relationships. Together, we would develop a tailored networking plan that aligns with their comfort level, starting with small, manageable steps like reaching out to former colleagues or attending industry events. I would also provide them with strategies and tools to make networking more approachable, such as preparing conversation starters or practicing elevator pitches.

When clients resist networking, it’s essential to first understand their concerns. Often, the fear of reaching out, being perceived as pushy, or doubting the effectiveness of networking are common worries. As a career development coach, I will activelly listen (Non Judgemental also) to these concerns and help reframe networking as a mutually beneficial exchange, not a mere transaction. By emphasizing that networking is about building relationships and offering value, clients can start to view it positively. Allow the person to make choice. If their resistance is due to lack of skill - then training tools can be recommended or provided.

There are usually good reasons, real or imagined that will cause one to shy away from networking .One may be introverted or lack self confidence hence limit or avoid engagement with others.I would use powerful questions, like,"What would you do in terms of networking to aid your job search uf you were 50% more confident?" These types of questions would help us discover some of the root causes of the reluctance and then coach them into developing confidence. It could be lack of guidance. As a coach I would guide them and support them by bringing an awareness on the benefits of networking through sharing my own positive experiences, testimonials, videos that will highlight the usefulness of networking.
