Over more than 20 years as an EA, I find that setting a system of management/cadence for the office I support makes it more efficient and set expectations for all the direct reports of that executive. Every year I tried to sign up for a special event - supporting for example one of our board members' expeditions, working with marketing on some of our big customer shows etc. Learning is a lifelong exercise and with each one of these projects, I got to add hard and soft skills like event planning, budgeting, resource management, compliance and governance to name a few. By working with people who are not directly in your day to day circle, you gain a different perspective and your horizon is now much larger.

One of the mistakes I believe admins do is not track what they do on a day to day basis. Getting busy with the operation and forget to take a minute to recognize and document their efforts, tasks and out of scope projects they handle. Key to admin progress is know what you do, to learn your strengths and seek growth for areas that needs improvement.

As EA we often get "attached" to an executive as in a specific person. It is important to remember we work for an office in a specific company, and we are responsible for the image, efficiency, value and business performance of that unit at the same level as the executive holding the role. We are business partner and have an active role in delivering corporate results.

Very critical to understand the business of your organization. This is irrespective if you are an Admins Asst./Manager or even a PA. Never refuse any opportunity to dive and collaborate in events or any role that you can assist. Do not restrict yourself to any role, open your arms wide to be work and learn, as learning should never end. With learning and experience you begin to define your goal. Goals can change with age and time considering the situation of life.

My top tips for all assistants are: 1. Remember that you and your work are worth every dollar that you are charging - you are an investment, a crucial asset to the executives that you are working with. 2. When in doubt, take a course. If you are looking at a potential client and thinking you can probably be successful in the role, BUT you don’t know how to do X, Y, or Z that they’re looking for - take an online course for those skills! You will gain confidence and the next time a potential client comes to you with a role requiring those skills, you will be ready.

Use discernment when others give you advice about administration goals. Some things that may work for you may not work for them, and vice versa.
