Here's how you can stay relevant in your industry after a layoff and during a job search.

Got laid off? Don't fret, comeback king/queen! Stay relevant and land that dream job with these power moves: Skill Up: Upskill with online courses or certifications. Become an unstoppable knowledge sponge! Network Like Crazy: Reconnect with old colleagues, attend industry events. Be a social butterfly with a career mission! Content is King/Queen: Share industry insights on social media or your own blog. Become a thought leader with a keyboard! Reframe the Layoff: Position it as an opportunity for growth in your cover letter and interviews. Spin that layoff narrative like a master storyteller! Remember, a layoff doesn't define you. Now go forth and dominate the job search like a phoenix rising from the ashes.

Networking: The saying "It is not what you know, it's who you know" can be misleading. It creates the impression that simply having a network guarantees opportunities. However, that is not always true. Just knowing someone doesn't necessarily mean they know you or your capabilities. To leverage the power of networking effectively, we need to shift the focus. As the saying goes, "It's not who you know, it's who knows you." This reframing emphasizes the importance of building a strong reputation. Your past work, skills, and work ethic all contribute to how people perceive you. A positive reputation can open doors and lead to opportunities because people trust you and your abilities.

Ante los cambios, es normal que aparezca la ansiedad, la incertidumbre y la angustia. Desde la visión del sistema nervioso, al cerebro le gusta la seguridad, lo predecible y las rutinas, los cambios se sienten inicialmente en el sistema nervioso, con una activación del S.N. Autónomo simpático, aquel que nos pone en modo lucha-huida, ansiedad y estado de alerta. Para poder sobrellevar en calma y con visión a futuro el cambio que viene con el despido, es fundamental primero gestionar las emociones y el estado mental, para poder generar un mindset adecuado, que empodere y permita asumir el cambio con motivación, claridad mental y capacidad de innovar y crear nuevas oportunidades.

Our resume is our business calling card. Yet, when we are happily employed, we may let it languish and stay stagnant. It is essential to review and update our resume at least once a year rather than wait for things to accumulate, and our achievements may fall into forgotten memories. Consult a job search coach - if they are provided as part of the layoff package, that's great. If not, there may be government or community supported employment assistant services, that may provide free / low-cost job search workshops to assist you. I certainly gained from accessing such services in Singapore.

Mentalidad de aprendiz es la clave para seguir evolucionando a nivel profesional, y para "navegar" un despido. La vida es dinámica, y así mismo lo son las compañías. Seguir aprendiendo y capacitándose le permite a un líder seguir ese dinamismo y evitar el estancamiento o hacerse obsoleto o irrelevante para el mercado y la industria. El aprendizaje permanente nos abre puertas, mantiene la mente creativa y activa y alimenta la seguridad personal y la autoestima.

Take the opportunity of more than usual available time, to build something new in you. Activate those latent cells in your mind & body that are waiting to be tapped with new knowledge and new experiences. Give yourself an opportunity to be greater than your previous self by indulging in libraries - books or people. Anything that gives you knowledge is a library. If you think learning is expensive, then get this, the Universe has been xtremely gracious off late and has provided a plethora of courses online FREE of cost. Enroll in the progam that you always wanted to learn or a skill set that you want to put in your resume. We are limited by our vision & the way to break these limitations is thorugh knowledge and wisdom! Best of luck!

I took the time during my unemployment to write for my industry newsletter. Learning is definitely useful, and I have definitely spent much time taking courses through Coursera and LinkedIn Learning! But learning by summarizing and sharing your expertise in the industry, through your writing or podcasting etc., may help you to stand up more, compared to the other job seekers out there!

Networking is a combination of asking effectively and creating value. Not necessarily in that order. It's also easier to say this when you aren't in need of a job. Part of it is remaining confident in the process or you look desperate. Ideally you want to be networking on a regular basis well before you need a job. That realization often comes later than it should. Either way, do your best and put yourself out there the best you can. People will know if you are looking for a job. You generally don't need to tell them. Do your best to create value for the people you are networking with, and hopefully your efforts will create your next opportunity.

Starting a blog, contributing to the industry newsletter, and speaking at conferences are all great ways to show that you are a Thought Leader in your field. Sharing your thoughts and advice in Collaborative posts like this is another way to show Thought Leadership. En el liderazgo personal y profesional es fundamental alimentar y sostener una mentalidad que invite al progreso, que nos ayude a superar los obstáculos y desafíos, y que nos genere paz, apertura y claridad mental para poder estar atentos a las nuevas oportunidades. Ante una situación de despido puede sobrevenir una crisis emocional (frustración, incertidumbre, baja autoestima, culpa, etc.). Es allí donde la interpretación, l creencias y la mentalidad que se cultive será clave para salir adelante y desarrollar habilidades que nos permitan adaptarnos y seguir fuertes trabajando en progresar. Cuidar los pensamientos y el bienestar general es la llave para una vida plena y desde allí volver al ruedo fortalecidos y más sabios.

What makes you happy? It may be a happy movie or meeting up with your best friend. Staying positive is difficult, especially in a prolonged job search situation. But it is essential to keep your Happy energy above 50%, if not higher, if you want to land that next job!

I know and empathise here that staying positive is extremely difficult when life hits. But life goes on and so should you. Hence we need to find a renewed YOU. How can we do that during crisis: 1) Wake up early and set intention for the day (What i want to do today?) 2) Allot time to each action item. 3) Strictly avoid all distractions - mobile phones or social media or entertainments during working hours. 4) Evaluate your accomplishment at the end of the day. 5) Visualise on a chart if you accomplished 100% or 80% or 50%.... Start with this and as you start getting the hold of this process, you will begin to notice a shift in your attitude altogether. PS: Spend some time in nature. A walk, a run or anything you like. Just do it!

Getting laid off doesn't necessarily mean you are irrelevant to the industry; it could simply be related to your company’s changing priorities. They might not be focusing on projects where your skills are crucial. Therefore, don’t feel hopeless or start doubting yourself. Remember, no one can take away your experience and expertise. You just need to identify where your skills will be more valued. Think about new skills you can develop to elevate your career to a new level. Stay updated with current trends and continuously upgrade your skills. Even if you haven’t been laid off, you are not truly secure unless you are actively doing both these things.
