If you work as part of a team ask a peer if they are familiar with presenting virtual and what tips they have. Do not underestimate the willingness of others wanting to share what they know.

Before diving into your presentation, ensure your technology is up to par. A stable internet connection is crucial to avoid disruptions. Use a high-quality webcam and microphone for clear audio and video. Familiarize yourself with the presentation platform, whether it's Zoom, Skype, or another service. This includes knowing how to share your screen and use interactive features like polls or Q&A sessions. Being technically prepared minimizes potential glitches that could detract from your message. Visual aids are extremely helpful, but I always make a couple of different examples and run them by a colleague prior to presenting. It may even be better to have a colleague who is unfamiliar to get their perspective. It’s really easy as a trainer to think about ‘what you think should be presented’ or ‘what you wish had been presented to you’. These principles can really help guide you, but sometimes by they may lead you into a ‘training black hole’. As in, no matter what you do you will get sucked further into it and there’s no escape. These black holes will ruin a group training session and need to be avoided. They can always be presented in more specialized sessions or in smaller groups when the audience is more advanced.

And the selection and creation of that picture becomes critical. A moving picture not only gets attention but creates a dimension which influences the thought flow and emotion of the watcher. With sound added, it bring the thoughts, ideas and emotions into another dimension, bringing reality to that image and ideas expressed in that picture where vocal explanations, if presented well, become "relative" to the ideas and images being presented.

Any time that you can add comparisons to current events, pop culture, or personal anecdotes can be very beneficial. It can be tricky depending on your audience, but a good gamble. One of the best keys for retention is memory association. We all have those things that we can always remember. For example: - the data reveals something hidden within it…you can make a comment about deciphering the DaVinci Code, tell them it’s like one of those pictures that has a 3D image inside, or it’s like ripping off a Mission Impossible mask. You can always use personal anecdotes depending on your comfort with the audience. ‘This data won’t hold up under scrutiny much like my first history paper in high school’. It’s a dumb joke, but it does really work.

Your presentation's content should be both informative and engaging. Start with a strong opening to grab your audience's attention and set the tone for what's to come. Structure your content logically, with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Use storytelling techniques to make complex information more relatable. Break down your points into digestible chunks and use rhetorical questions to provoke thought. Keep your language simple and jargon-free unless it's industry-specific and you're sure your audience will understand. For instance, sharing a relevant anecdote can make your content more memorable.

While much of this depends on the topic and subject matter, understanding and knowing your audience is critical. All presentations are 3 dimensional and the physical, mental and emotional aspects must be considered along with the situations, conditions, circumstances, and the environments of both the presenter and the audience often in different times and places that are not only different but constantly changing separately. The message is one thing, but "how" that is being received is the critical issue for any presentation to get meaningful results. Such problems are often resolved by prior communication and consultation with all parties and related entities to get the best perspective.

Be Prepared: Practice with your technology beforehand. Test all features and record your practice sessions to identify areas for improvement. Be Assisted: Have someone handle technical issues and field questions. If multiple remote audience members are in one location, designate someone as your “eyes and ears.”

Writing stuff out, making an outline, etc. like a speech class in high school or college is really helpful, but be comfortable enough with it that it can feel more conversational. The audience may start to tune you out if it feels like you’re reading from a book. In addition to practicing in front of a mirror, I like to test specific topics or techniques with individuals in a 1:1 or even up to a 1:4 setting before moving it to a large group. If I’m training on a specific process, I can teach it to someone who may know it to see if they have any instructions that can be beneficial.

Such non-verbal cues, cultivated through practice, are vital in conveying enthusiasm and maintaining engagement, effectively bridging the gap between virtual and in-person presentations. Even from a distance, well-executed body language can captivate and connect with audience.

The advantage of virtual training sessions is that people who might be too nervous to raise their hand may be more willing to add a comment or ask a question. The more open that you can make the forum the more comfortable the audience will feel. The more comfortable the audience, the more engaged and the more they will retain. Questions can get a little cumbersome depending on the topic. I like to tell people that some questions may be answered during the presentation, but that others may be at the end, or even afterward if it is allowed.

As always this is the critical part of any communication effort. It must be bilateral and shared so that there is no misconceptions and misunderstandings. The key to that being able to ask pertinent, relative and "inviting" questions for answers or questions to establish interaction.

The above scenario appear to be the obvious needs and processes that can make a presentation work. The problem I find in all such presentation is "time" and "distance." To resolve that, the most effective planning must include the KISS (keep it simple and short) principle. The attention span and concentration for any one subject is said to be less than 10 minuets for adults and children alike. Then, the mind wanders. That is why most internet sites keep their pages simple and clean using links to details of interest. The summary, consideration and conclusion is made on the first page, taking less than one minute. That requires all presentations be precise, concise, accurate, relative, meaningful, conclusive and to the point.
