Networking is indeed crucial, but it's equally important to cultivate a 'beginner's mindset.' In VC, assuming you know everything can be detrimental. I make it a point to approach each new connection and startup pitch with genuine curiosity, regardless of my experience. This openness has led me to gether interesting insights in unexpected areas.

Network is crucial in all industries, but I think it is utmost important to the VC industry. I find that usually the good quality deals come from friendly VC referrals. Plus, having a wide range of VCs and domain experts helps with startup & market evaluation. I'm grateful that many in my network are very knowledgeable on certain areas, and every time we talk, I learn something new.

Rather than analyzing successes, I prefer analyzing failures. Understand what you did wrong and avoid that in the future. Why did you not invest in a deal? What did you miss in the founder/market? What made you falsely believe the market was booming?

While studying successes is valuable, I've found that the most instructive lessons often come from the 'almost-successes' - startups that showed great promise but fell just short.
