Though people often categorize SLII as a typical leadership model, mostly it’s how you communicate in different situations makes significant difference. A great leader would able to access and 1) Provide clear direction basis team members ability on the project. 2) Coach team members on certain situations. 3) Support team members and provide little direction according to the situation. 4) Trust and delegate completely as and when required.

Do's and don't, pros and cons, highlights and low points, hindrances, helps, all should be examined and evaluated by the team to note how to do better in the future. Keep note of resources (persons, things, information) that benefited the process and make sure all are aware of stumbling blocks that hindered the process and avoid in the future. Tweak/improve on the things that were not bad but could be better.

If necessary, use a facilitator to keep the review focused and constructive. People are unlikely to raise issues if they feel they will be persecuted as a result. So 'trust' is a key element here and it may take some time to build it to the level that people feel safe enough to raise issues without a facilitator. Think about previous project reviews and what expectations they have set with your team. Are they used to a genuine "Plan / Do / Review / Improve" cycle? or do they see a "Plan / Do / Next!" cycle that places little value on the review process other than to place blame for any issues? If it is the latter, the chances are that little is being learned and the same mistakes are likely to happen again next time.

Reflection is a must! Take the time to huddle up for a quick replay. Provide a safe space for the good, the bad, and the "how did we pull that off?" moments. This isn't about pointing fingers; it's about leveling up for next time. Ask the team about the deadline. Did it feel like a comfy pair of jeans, or more like those skinny jeans you regret buying? Discuss how to make the next project timeline fit just right. Feedback is gold. It's how to go from good to great. So, spill the tea. Together, you’ll turn those lessons into action items for crushing future projects.

Considering project deadlines and tasks are iterative, these after action reviews are critical for improving efficiency in meeting them. The leader is encouraged to develop a learning agenda and a culture that values such assessments and feedback to improve upon systems for meeting deadlines.

Many organizations fall short in this area. All organizations need to make continuous improvement part of their culture. It’s more than just talking by about the good and bad, it’s must include how to turn the bad into good and the good into great.

Give your team a voice. You can take things only so far as a leader. True leadership is about understanding the strengths of your team and their genius. Get their feedback before finishing up or better yet in the creation process. I realize some teams are set up to only receive instructions and be task masters. And that is fine. Think about what type of team you desire though. If it is one where you all collaborate and everyone takes ownership in projects from a place of desiring to have impact, then consider a new direction.
