Here's how you can learn and grow from career failures: seeking feedback and guidance.

Embracing setbacks is an opportunity to have a come back with a different approach, mentality and perspective. I believe and value the concept of embracing and normalizing failure because it turns my scares into stars of resiliency, faith and relentlessness. Furthermore, relying on developing a holistic network/community of people who can provide motivation, feedback and inspiration that will help you be accountable for your actions and purpose. Life starts with a beginning, the middle called the process (trying, testing, failing and adjusting) and the end which is your target/goal you want to hit. As humans you are designed to fail, get back up and try again by leveraging the power of choice. It's all in your head what you choose to do.

Ao considerarmos os desafios e fracassos como partes essenciais do crescimento pessoal e profissional, podemos desenvolver uma resiliência muito maior. Solicitar feedback e se abrir para críticas construtivas de colegas e mentores é uma prática excelente para aperfeiçoar habilidades e identificar áreas que precisam de melhorias. Isso transforma a experiência do fracasso em uma ferramenta poderosa para o desenvolvimento contínuo, o que é um diferencial importante entre profissionais bem-sucedidos e os demais.

While seeking feedback and guidance is invaluable, it's also essential to develop the ability to self-reflect and learn independently from failures. Relying too heavily on external feedback can sometimes hinder your personal growth and self-reliance.

‘There is no such thing as failure’ just learning ( and whilst doing so, also being compassionate with yourself !). I was once held to accountability for an alleged breach of confidentiality. Going through process was so stressful but a huge learning opportunity and latterly it was disproved through this process.

This is the most crucial phase in letting go of “the plan” and embracing something uncertain and new. Investing all your mental and emotional currency in one plan can make change paralyzing if the plan does not go your way. This is especially the case with those who either make hasty uninformed decisions when going back to school or do not take a “planned happenstance” orientation to their career. Successful people in finance diversify and hedge their portfolio(s) to manage financial risk. It should be no different with career development. Planning for contingencies is crucial but even more essential is truly being mentally and emotionally committed to exploring those contingencies by being open to possibility.

Recently realised true impact of chronic burn out before starting current role. To manage this I have started setting up systems to remind me and exploring Apps, pacing and changing task durations and demands, reviewing a job plan, clarifying role expectations, engaging in regular peer support and scheduling more down time . I’m also being kind to myself

Common advice often suggests learning from failures but may not detail a systematic approach. To systematically learn from failures, I use a structured approach called the "After-Action Review" (AAR). This involves three steps: 1) Identifying what went well 2) Identify what didn't 3) Identify what can be improved Document these insights and create a continuous improvement loop that helps you grow from each experience.

Em minha prática, vejo como a educação contínua pode transformar não apenas a competência profissional, mas também a autoconfiança. Cada novo conhecimento adquirido e cada barreira superada contribuem significativamente para uma base sólida em qualquer carreira. Isso reflete um compromisso não apenas com o sucesso profissional, mas com o desenvolvimento de uma vida mais rica e plena. Encarar cada fracasso como um degrau para o crescimento é uma perspectiva poderosa que promove uma jornada de aprendizado contínuo e adaptabilidade.

A question my daughter once came home from School with is : ‘How do you know what you think you know ? It’s always stayed with me and knowing there is always more to learn, ongoing space to grow professionally and personally means I don’t count down days to retirement. I don’t get complacent . Einsteins quote ‘Never loose thine holy curiosity’ is very fitting ! Becoming an independent practitioner liberated me, I didn’t need to wait for funding for a course, I could choose my direction. I still do this as CPD is ultimately our responsibility. Being passionate about what you do is ‘key’.
