Here's how you can gather and analyze data when solving complex problems.

Whenever you are faced with a new project, you always need to define AND clarify the reason for the project. Are you trying to describe a situation? Are you trying to uncover underlying problems? Are you seeking to make a process or program more efficient? By understanding what the goals are, you'll be better able to understand how to address the situation at hand, what data needs to be gathered, who the primary audience is, etc. And again, never forget to clarify. Whatever you think you know, go back to the audience, understand what goals are trying to be achieved, and base your approach on that.

Objective: Clearly define what you're trying to achieve. This could involve improving efficiency, reducing costs, or enhancing customer satisfaction. Identify KPIs: Determine key performance indicators that will help measure progress towards your goals. Clarify Objectives: Engage with stakeholders to ensure a shared understanding of the goals. This helps in focusing efforts and avoiding irrelevant data collection. Example: In a project to reduce customer complaints, the goal might be to decrease complaints by 20% within six months. KPIs could include the number of complaints per month and customer satisfaction scores.

For quantitative data, you can construct surveys in such user-friendly programs as Qualtrics, Survey Monkey, and Jotform. With a low sample size and low number of survey questions, you can even use these programs to collect data and do some basic analysis for free. Qualitative data that is collected via audio or visual tools can be transcribed into words which can then be analyzed in such programs as MAXQDA, Dedoose, and NVivo. These programs allow you to analyze data collected in survey "other" responses, open-ended survey questions, individual interviews, and focus groups.

For qualitative data, MAXQDA, Dedoose, and NVivo allow you to extract themes and do cluster analysis. These programs can assign positive, negative, and neutral categorization of themes, which can be useful in political research such as candidate polling data, or market research such as customer satisfaction data.

Objective: Make sense of the analyzed data and derive actionable insights. Contextual Analysis: Consider the implications within your team or organization. Bias Consideration: Ensure objective interpretation by considering different perspectives. Strategic Insights: Use insights to inform decision-making.
