Antes de sumergirse en el pensamiento estratégico, es esencial también cultivar relaciones sólidas con los equipos operativos y técnicos. Esto facilita una comprensión más profunda de las dinámicas internas y permite una colaboración efectiva en la implementación de mejoras. Al trabajar en estrecha colaboración con quienes están directamente involucrados en las operaciones diarias, se maximiza el impacto de las decisiones estratégicas y se fortalece la ejecución de iniciativas de mejora continua.

Para comprender los conceptos basicos de una planta hay que entender bien todos y cada uno de sus procesos. Para este fin, lo que yo suelo hacer con el equipo es repartir los sistemas con cada uno o entre varios y que preparen una presentacion al resto del grupo. De esta manera todos ven uno por uno los sistemas y hacen las preguntas aclaratorias que necesitan. Tambien es interesante realizar un manual con los planos de ubicacion real de los equipos y sus conexiones, una vez entendidos desde el punto anterior. Posteriormente los ubicaremos en DCS, con lo que todo el sistema quedara claro. A partir de ahi podremos plantearnos mejoras y correcciones.

It's always easier to start off with the basic fundamentals of the process you're operating. Over time, you'll gain a deeper level of understanding of the process and you should be able to put them together like building blocks. A couple of key things to remember are; never be afraid to ask a question, even if you feel it may sound stupid! And take notes, you'll never be able to remember every detail, keep an organised notebook or something similar. Knowledge is power!

Understanding basics may sound basic but it's profoundly fundamental. It gives perspective to how the individual systems find their place in the overall plant and support accordingly. Therefore understanding the basics is setting the clear foundation for understanding everything else.

Es fundamental involucrar a todas las partes interesadas relevantes en el proceso de establecimiento de metas. Esto incluye a líderes de equipo, operadores clave y expertos técnicos que pueden aportar perspectivas variadas y asegurar que los objetivos sean realistas y pertinentes para todas las áreas involucradas. La colaboración desde el inicio fortalece el compromiso con los objetivos estratégicos y aumenta las posibilidades de éxito en su consecución.

Goals define the desired end. Clear and well defined goals stipulate what the team should strive for, individual contributions and instill accountability by assigning individual ownership. Goals make the action worth the pursuit. This is what drives people and promises them satisfaction.

Data is golden. Well collected and meaningful data inspired informed decision making processes. Every plant needs to collect, analyze and review its operational data in order to understand what affects their performance, how to rectify the bottlenecks, how to maximize the production by focusing on what works and delivers better results. Analyzing data is a prerequisite for improvement and optimization.

No man is an island. Operations require collaborative efforts where different people contribute their unique skills and competence to optimize plant efficiency and output. Collaboration should be strongly encouraged and rewarded. It brings fresh perspective and dynamism into the operations.

Plant ops revolve around cost, uptime, quality and safety. Strategy implies thinking about new ways to flex or customize production, how to expand capacity w/o capex, how to broaden product mix. It can also mean bundling new products or services with the traditional offering. New strategies can involve tolling, swapping goods and services, sharing personnel with a customer/client.
