Collaboration on any project, and I have done many with differentially talented groups screenwriting for television shows. The bringing together of brilliance and balance is always difficult. Rewarding and respecting the brilliance necessary to complete or come up with a great result on a time critical basis requires a balancing act of leadership that takes a lot of pre-planning. You must have the brilliance while you also much have the cooperation of the rest of the team doing the heavy hauling part of putting it together. How to encourage and reward both of those factions without tearing the team apart requires careful presentation and thoughtful preparation. Many times private sessions with group members really do work.

Of all the subtopics in this thread, I have found clear communication to be the key. I am on the East Coast and many of my clients and collaborators are on the West Coast. Some are international. The biggest barrier to success with a team in different time zones is taking advantage to make unexpected, large-scale changes to shared work after team members have signed off. Another barrier is inundating team members with links, messages, and requests after they have signed off. There is no worse feeling than waking up and being flooded with messages and seeing the day's work undone. I left a freelance gig 18 months ago because these practices were persistent on the part of the team leader.
