From the perspective of a crafter, it is useful to have a lot of backup items created in case bits and bobs you need don't arrive in time for a show. However, from the perspective of an animal carer it is more complicated. It's essential to keep a back stock of animal feed. Switching an animals diet suddenly can cause digestive distress, so if a switch is going to happen it needs to be done slowly, mixing the two feeds over a period of time. As such, you need to have extra feed in the inventory when ordering, so that if a product cannot be provided, you're prepared to make a switch.

An example of this is from a decade ago when I had my little shop. I had been waiting on a supplier who wasn't communicating. Eventually I found out that they'd run out of stock, and wouldn't have any more. It took them months to tell me this though. If I'd researched backup suppliers, I could have cancelled the order and ordered from someone else.

When you are in a situation where you are experiencing delays due to supply chain issue then most important thing is to avoid blame game and concentrate all efforts towards finding the interim actions to improve the situation. Use of technology should be done to get real time insights of the situation. Your risk mitigation plan / contingency plan can give you some heads up to take actions. Further brainstorming on the potential alternative ways to speed up the process & activities needs to be looked at. Keeping the end customer informed may also help to get required support to absorb some delays and required influence in the supply chain for issue resolution. In the end don’t forget to capture the lessons learned to improve the process.

Supply chain delay is bound to happen. We have to plan in advance with multiple vendors or atleast two vendors.We always try or develop one local vendor to overcome supply chain delay . Always go for solutions and avoid blame game
