Your client ignores your coaching suggestions. How can you effectively guide them towards growth?

If a client consistently ignores their coach's suggestions, there is an underlying reason why. Try and understand things from their perspective. Engage in active listening and ask open-ended questions to try and understand where the client is coming from. There could be underlying fears, misconceptions, or personal preferences at play.

Strengthen your relationship with the client to build trust. This can make them more open to your suggestions in the future. Reassure them they are in a safe space and can speak openly. Using phrases such as, "So what I'm hearing is..." can help reinforce your active listening and help the client feel heard and understood.

Coaching is not a one-size-fits-all approach. You really have to customize your coaching style to fit with the client. It is crucial to have a consult with the client first to even see if you would be a good fit for each other. Get clear on what the client's needs, goals, and wants are out of the relationship, and if that fits within your practice, great. If not, be ready with a list of other coaches you can refer out to.

Some clients get overwhelmed with a laundry list of goals. Start with small, manageable tasks that can build their confidence and demonstrate the value of your suggestions. Consistent communication and check-in points are valuable here to help the client stay on track.

Encourage them to take ownership of their growth process. Help them set their own goals and create their own action plans. Also, have them make a list of what the consequences of inaction are for the specific goal. Sometimes it takes answering the "what if's" to help your client understand the gravity of their actions or inactions.

Periodically review progress together and reflect on what is working and what isn't. Adjust your strategies as needed based on these reflections. Encourage self-reflection and insight by asking questions that prompt them to think deeply about their goals and obstacles. This can help them arrive at conclusions on their own.

If someone your coaching isn't acting on your advice, it's not a flaw in coaching. They're paying you for advice, not for you to change them.
