What are effective ways to communicate your vision?

While it's crucial to personalize your message to your audience, leaders should occasionally step outside the box and present fresh ideas to promote development and innovation. While it's true that the audience may first be dumbfounded and shocked, pushing boundaries and implementing novel ideas can occasionally result in creative solutions and alluring notions that could aid in the expansion of the vision.

Vision is rooted in 'why'—our driving force, more than a statement. It's the belief fueling our actions. Communication must be a dialogue, inviting ideas, igniting innovation, and fostering ownership. Recognition goes beyond 'well done'; it celebrates shared values and collective journeys. Sometimes knowing your audience means that you have to be highly agile and adapt your communication or message to each individual, team, function/division, level in the company, client type, or industry. One message does not fit all.

Passion is an essential element when communicating your vision. You need to demonstrate excitement and genuine belief in your vision as this can be contagious. Harness your enthusiasm to paint a vibrant picture of your vision and express it with energy and conviction. Showing passion assures your audience that your vision is not only valuable but also achievable, thus motivating them to fully engage with and support your vision's realization.

Once you come up with your concept, or cause and identify your community, you will need to communicate it to that respective community. The message you communicate should be very clear, where it should be acceptable, actionable, and achievable. There by it should clearly have the acceptance of the community, where they should believe in your cause or concept, and they should be relate it and apply it to themselves taking ownership, in order to help you collectively achieve the aspiration.

It goes without saying that you should communicate your vision in a clear and concise way. But most importantly: you should live it. Leading by example is the best way to show that you are serious about the vision. People listen to what you say, but they also watch what you do. If your actions are not in line with your vision, it's as good as dead.

One thing I have found helpful is when you individualise your vision. Speak to eachone in a language they understand. Many times we settle for assumptions, thinking your employees buy into your visions whereas they can not see how the actuality of will be useful to them. Let your employees own your vision and see how they will rum with it.

I agree with being clear in messaging. However, concise can be a bit biased. Yes, many executives may prefer concise but some people learn differently and receive information differently. There are audiences that may prefer more lengthy, detailed messaging. Diversifying your messaging is helpful in order to reach the most people effectively.

As manipulating emotions or misrepresenting the truth can harm trust, credibility, and the sustainability of leadership efforts, leaders must be careful not to do so. To uphold confidence and produce lasting results, communication must be ethical, transparent, and authentic. According to my observations, managers and other leaders may instill their aspirations in others without giving them any consideration or evaluation, leading them to harbor hopes for an unattainable future. People might eventually grow disillusioned and untrusting as a result of this.

In today's AI world where communication is genericized, stories will become even more important. Some ways of storytelling as related to vision include: Postcard from the future - Write a fictional letter or postcard dated in the future from a satisfied customer who describes how your company's product/service has improved their life. Video mockumentary - Create a fake documentary portraying your company's origins and impact on the world. Use interviews with customers, experts, and employees. Get creative in showcasing your company's vision, purpose, and strengths through fictionalized stories and scenarios. Vivid narratives will capture attention and imagination.

Stories are a wonderful way to bring a vision to life as it gives your audience something relatable, memorable and emotional to tune into. Stories get transmitted virally as they're much easier to share with others than facts and data! As a 20 year practicing martial artist, I know the power of using your body, voice and space to influence others. So this should be part of your prep- map out the highs & lows of your story, reinforce with spatial anchoring (the way you use the space to help recall), gestures, body language & change in voice tone. It will transform your message!

He is the go-to person, not only for work-related matters but also for guidance in various aspects of life. His receptivity to new ideas was unparalleled, yet he remained remarkably humble. He steadfastly championed the idea that work should be a source of joy, particularly when it comes to the pursuit of learning. Leaders of this caliber are highly sought after, for they bring an unparalleled sense of fulfillment and inspiration to those fortunate enough to work alongside them. This is a part of communication. You can use various tools and methodologies in order to communicate it to your identified community. It could be through online broadcasts, it could be through traditional channels or Television or Radio, it could be through social media channels, it could be through workshops or seminars, or channels like "TEDX". Once you have identified some channels you will need to look at the most effective, probable mode where you can reach your target community. Then you case use story telling, examples and other modes which could be relatable and connect with you.

As stated you cannot carry your vision on your own, your target community or audience should be able to connect to the vision, in order to make it their own. We will never get engaged or involved in anything that is not connected to our heart. We will be a part of it for some time, but that interest will fail off over time as we do not resonate with the vision.

Using the Appreciative Inquiry SOAR model as a collective team exercise guided by an experienced facilitator creates a shared vision where everyone feels a part of the process and the result. Building on that, and knowing the team’s purpose and values, create team then individual goals aligns everyone’s efforts up through the vision - so the stories become shared experiences that drive the team forward together. A fun community effort is to create a team vision board that is displayed and updated on a regular basis.

Engaging your audience is so important but potentially even more important is how you engage them. Allowing multiple ways to engage ensures inclusivity. Some people are not comfortable sharing openly or verbally and may prefer an anonymous way to share.

Employees and stakeholders buy-in to a vision when they’re involved right at the beginning. This shouldn’t be a tick box exercise, but a real and meaningful way to listen and share ideas. A vision should also be reviewed on a regular basis with everyone involved. Continually working towards a shared vision that was developed a couple of years ago is like putting chlorine in one end of a swimming pool. Pointless.

it's mutual! ask questions, focus on your audiences contribution. By involving your audience and having them as a part of it - you create trust, commitment, proactive approach and create the attatchment.

Do you ever watch a movie or TV show a second or third time and feel like you learned something new or discovered a part that you thought you must have missed the first time? We’ll, you likely didn’t miss it but just don’t recall it because we don’t recall everything we hear, see, or even experience. This is why repetition is key especially with important messages and communication.

In my experience, making people part of the vision by rewarding great execution of one of the elements works really well. What do I mean by that? Well, if your vision is "most satisfied customers", do not only reward people that you think do this best. Reach out to your customers and ask who they would reward. Let employees nominate their colleagues (you don't see everything). We made this a fun event with rotating rewards, like a dinner for two, concert tickets etc. It does not have to cost much, and choose something your employees value.

Before you can expect others to align themselves to your vision, you must be aligned with your vision! Few things will undermine your vision as quickly as hypocrisy. If those around you perceive a lack of authentic commitment to the vision you are promoting, they will quickly lose any faith in it. So if your vision isn’t good enough to inspire you, don’t try to pawn it off to others, refine it until you believe in it!

Leading by example is critical for success but can be a delicate line to walk. In terms of its criticality, to a previous comment, if the vision doesn’t inspire you, it will be impossible to truly and sustainably inspire others, no matter how you communicate. This is especially important since being truly visionary means charting unfamiliar territory, which is not an easy path. If you’re not fully bought in, you won’t keep walking the path when you hit the inevitable tough times and others will follow. The tough line is leading the vision while allowing people freedom to determine how that vision is achieved. When you’re passionate about the vision, it’s easy to get too into the weeds, stifling the creativity and innovation of the team.

Communicate across all channels. For a leader, the most effective communication strategy involves consistent outreach across all available channels. In today's fast-paced environment, where information overload is a common challenge, messages can easily get lost in the noise. To combat this, I recommend staying on the core message, maintaining brevity, and making the most of every opportunity to engage meaningfully. Furthermore, it's essential to convey objectives in a manner that personally resonates with each individual.

I've found these areas to be vital when communicating the vision with my team: Clarity: I have encapsulated our long-term goals and the path to achieving them in one sentence. Storytelling: I give real-life examples that illustrate our vision's impact on the market and our clients, making it relatable and engaging. Visuals: We use infographics to simplify complex concepts and make the vision more accessible. Consistency: We discuss the vision regularly in team meetings, emails, and one-on-one interactions to reinforce its importance. Inclusivity: We encourage input and feedback from our team, making them feel part of the vision's creation and execution. I've found these work effectively and encourages growth and participation.

70 years ago we described leaders as... "Having a vision of the goals they want to reach and how they will achieve those goals." Today, leadership continues to revolve around that definition. But, in recent years... Alternative approaches have leaders playing different roles in different situations. These are often described as the difference between "complicated" and "complex" decision situations. The first imposes technical rationality from the "top-down." The second is solved from the "bottom-up"... Where employees and stakeholders are invited to come up with their own solutions. Modern leaders are more than "visionary." Instead of... ❌ “I DRIVE THE VISION.” Their mindset is... ✅ "I CREATE THE SPACE FOR THINGS TO EMERGE.”

Even leaders who communicate their vision effectively can undermine their own intentions without considering how the vision gets executed. There's nothing worse than rolling out a vision and assuming it'll be adopted by declaration alone. This puts your team in a double bind: aware (and on board) with the new vision but stuck with the tools and structures of the old one. Good leaders communicate their vision, great leaders create the conditions in which it will actually succeed.

“Authenticity” can also help leaders communicate visions more effectively. It can build trust and make deeper connections between the people on the team. To be authentic, we have to make sure our vision is aligned with what we believe, think, do and feel.
