What do you do if your data architecture project fails?

Analyze Root Causes: Identify why the project failed—whether due to technical issues, misalignment, or legacy systems. Document Lessons Learned: Capture insights to prevent similar pitfalls in future endeavors. Evaluate Alternatives: Explore other solutions or approaches. Iterate and Adapt: Learn from setbacks and adjust your strategy.

Example: A data warehousing project fails to meet performance expectations. System logs reveal slow query processing due to an inefficient data model design. A root cause analysis helps you identify the need for data normalization to optimize query performance. RCA is first thing. Evaluate data quality metrics (completeness, accuracy, consistency) to pinpoint areas where data issues might have hindered the project. Technical Review: Assess the chosen technologies and architectural choices to determine if they were suitable for the project's requirements.

First of all need to know the cause of failure, by performing required analysis, based on the outcome of the analysis proper recovery plan needs to be executed. Based on my experience major cause of failures are requirement understanding mis-alignment both functional as well as non-functional. Lack of expertise in team to model/design/code/test. Lack of communication between internal and external stakeholders.

In all project failures, these must become the focus: 1. Was the Business strategy well covered in the Problem Domain(PD)? 2. Did the scope cover the PD? 3. Did Business and Executive sponsors well aligned? 4. Did the initial Project Plan reflect on the true scope of the project?

Look into scope and project plan - are these aligned? Did you have the right resources? Did you have a realistic project baseline - with deliverables and milestones?

For instance , encourage team members to share their insights and ideas on what went wrong and how to improve. This not only fosters a sense of ownership but also leverages the team's collective expertise.

Consider the initial project budget carefully. While there may be a desire to adjust and save costs, it's important to resist this urge. Instead, leverage the initial budget buffers to ensure you can afford and manage to implement quality technology solutions. Cutting corners on technology can lead to future problems and expenses. It's better to prioritize quality within the budget you have allocated initially.
