Networking is a crucial skill during a career transition. It helps discover opportunities, learn from other professionals, and gain support and guidance. To succeed, it's essential to set clear goals, be persistent, and focus on building genuine relationships with individuals in your target field.

When it comes to networking during this time, I've found that a few key strategies make a big difference: ✅ Use your current connections. ✅ Engage online (LinkedIn is great). ✅ Attend industry events. ✅ Set up informational interviews. ✅ Give back to your network. Identifying goals is so very crucial. I always give example of a ship that has a captain on board and route mapped and another without route and captain. What will happen? The ship first ship will reach its destination 99.99% of the time. The second ship? Well, it may wander until it runs out of fuel or meets with an untoward accident. So is true with us. Those with goals are most likely to succeed than those without. Identifying goals starts with understanding one's strengths and weaknesses and mapping them to the opportunities. It's a simple exercise & all we need is a plain sheet of paper, a pen & distraction free atmosphere (read digital free atmosphere!) Of course, it's not that simple. It starts with self-discovery of oneself!

Expanding my network as a professional coach has been an inspiring journey. Attending coaching conferences and connecting with fellow coaches has not only deepened my knowledge but also led to meaningful collaborations and mentorships. It's a reminder that in coaching, building connections is as rewarding as the learning itself.

My network is my net worth. The importance of this mantra didn’t really hit me until I was ready to transition industries. The relationships I built with people I hung out with in college and grad school, my colleagues at work — that is my net worth, and I treat each one of those relationships like a diamond. They are that valuable.

In my experience, it’s better to give than ask. Share your knowledge, experience and insights, but don’t ask for things in return. Just share what you have, freely and regularly, making sure that what you share has value to the network. When the day comes that you need your networks help, they’ll be more likely to jump in and help out. Whether that’s the day you lose a job, do a fundraiser, or release a product or service to market - save your ask for then, when you need it.

My journey in networking has focussed mainly on sharing. Sharing knowledge, sharing ideas, and clapping for people when they succeed. While these things can seem trivial, it's very important to maintain healthy relations with your network. People see through our intentions, They always do. So do good to get good. That's my mantra.

Networking is about people, about developing relationships and building a community. As a baseline, understanding the why, being curious, being specific and not being fake shows the person you’re talking to that you respect and value them. But I don’t think it stops there. Often times, you would have learned something about the person that sheds light on some other ways you can give. Giving doesn’t just have to be monetary. It can be as simple as being engaged with their social media posts, offering to make an introduction, or even just making yourself available to help another time. I was surprised at how generous people were with their time, content to have just helped someone out. Don’t take them for granted.

"Keep adding value, the network will recognize for your efforts and start supporting you", this is what my professor from college used to say. 16 years after my college graduation, I have not forgotten this statement a single moment. Staying grounded and grateful could go a long way in leveraging the power of true networking.

I’ve learned that the most meaningful endeavors stem from curiosity. Curiosity fosters good questions and in turn good discussions. Naturally, good discussions help build stronger relationships, broaden my perspectives, and clarify my why. I’ve noticed that job seekers (including myself at times) often approach networking with a mental checklist of dos and don’ts, eager to get through the checklist with the expectation that the conversation will end with the swapping of business cards, a promise of an interview, or at the very least a referral. This mentality is extremely distracting because you’re never listening but rather just waiting to ask a question. Always stay curious and quality conversations attract opportunities.
