As a start-up you should not focus on an exit strategy. The focus for a start-up should be 100% customer-driven, developing innovative and differentiated products that solve customer challenges for a given market. Execute on that initial focus and your exit strategy, whether IPO or acquisition, will be natural.

There’s nothing wrong with having a preferred exit route at the beginning of the venture, but keeping your customers happy and having sound unit economics that are scalable will make this happen and these factors have to be the primary focus when starting out

Goals should be defined early in one's life especially at the age of beginning senior high school. Once a year, the goals are assessed with the performance of the student in the previous year and as a parent discuss with the young student about what is affecting their daily life and ability to achieve their goal during the previous year. During this period the parent helps the student to learn simple skills in the trade sector which will enable creativity, growth, knowledge, skills and wealth, contributing time to worthy causes whilst saving money and watching it put into investments and self-employment and employment for the family from generation to generation.

Many times as startup’s with limited fund and cash flow you end up doing quite a few things for survival but ultimate value is IP, which takes sometime to materialise especially in a service based startup. But having that clarity of what leads to what level of valuation is important so that we eventually invest more focus towards it once we are past the initial 2-3 years of survival cycle.

In my experience, establishing a Unique Value Proposition (UVP) is critical, whether you're planning for an exit or not. Value proposition is very important but understanding where buyers see value is also critical. What products and services deliver good margin and drive profits plus have the potential to grow. That's what will be considered in a valuation not necessarily what excites you as the owner.

Regularly review market analyses & forecasts to identify the optimal time for exit. My best advice: prepare early & remain flexible. Having led some 30 M&A deals, I've always been a firm believer in "It's better to be bought than to be sold..." Great deals with much less risks can at times be done without usual tedious "process", especially if in reality there's only a small number of potential hot suitors. Informal flirtation can lead to private unsolicited offers: 1. Non-binding credibly serous bid. 2. Conditioned on limited time exclusivity & fast closing. "Credibly serous?": 85-90% what one might expect in succesful auction, but without the risks and drama...

Bringing on the right team of M&A experts is critical when running a high-growth company and navigating a roadshow, however, the most important part of your exit team is your existing team of employees and executives who helped build a valuable company in the first place. They should be an intentional part of your exit strategy. Share your goals for the company early and often. Make sure everyone is bought in and motivated to achieve that goal together. Create equity incentives and craft thoughtful communications around milestones. When it comes time for diligence, you want everyone already on their A-game and focused on consistent growth.

Focus on transaction experience and chemistry within the team, the most important factor is ability to work with management, especially the CFO and the finance team who is typically ends up doing most of the heavy lifting

One of the best resources I've found on this topic is the book *Built to Sell* by John Warrillow. It tells the story of an ad agency owner who builds a business that can thrive without him. Warrillow emphasizes that the number one mistake entrepreneurs make is creating a business that relies too heavily on their involvement. Warrillow suggests three key criteria: Teachable: Focus on offerings that can be easily taught to employees, Valuable: Specialize in doing one thing exceptionally well, Repeatable: Create recurring revenue streams by developing products or services that customers need to repurchase regularly. 20 years later, I still haven’t fully implemented them. Maybe it’s time to re-read John’s book before I become obsolete.
