Always start a project with a clear understanding of the exact goals you need to achieve. It is also crucial to ensure that everyone on the project shares this same perspective. Setting goals using the SMART formula is a method I frequently apply.

Goal setting is paramount in the team performance management. The S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) criteria is the gold standard of defining goals. A goal has to be achievable in general, if your team is working on research or pathfinding project, the outcome can be uncertain and the path to the goal may not be clear at the outset. Therefore, setting open-ended goals can be more appropriate. This allows for exploration, learning, and innovation, which are all key aspects of research and pathfinding. New goals can also be added after making initial progress in the project.

Consistent regular check-ins are key for effective team management. This is opportunity to offer feedback on the goal and correct course when it begin to derivatives from set goal. It’s crucial to always include learning and development topics in the agenda to foster continuous growth. When scheduling weekly check in it's best to avoid Monday or Friday. Monday is not ideal for the US based team as many public holidays are on Monday.

We implemented regular check-ins and feedback sessions to ensure continuous improvement.
