Here's how you can navigate the transition from a junior to a senior role in Process Design.

Consolidate your knowledge of the basic principles of designing a process. Make sure you fully understand the main ideas, as well as the commonly used techniques and tools like Lean, Six Sigma, and process mapping that are central to this domain. Develop and enlarge your professional network. Establish connections with colleagues, industry insiders, and acknowledged experts in the business of process design. Make use of a variety of different networking avenues — from conferences to online forums to professional organizations — and do not neglect the essential peer-to-peer networking that takes place right within your company. Hearing from diverse voices and meeting a variety of people will expose you to different working styles, and maybe even a different way of thinking; both of which will strengthen your skills in process design.

Assume the lead on initiatives and projects. We can't always be the first one in, but we can still achieve recognition by taking the first step toward solving a problem. One way to do this is by leading projects from the front or by proposing projects when we see an area for improvement. Indeed, leading by example in this way solves two problems at once. The first is the immediate problem of where a leader is going to come from for a specific project—the second, whether that person is qualified to really lead the project in the first place.

Always work to make your skills and knowledge better than they are. Be up to date on the newest trends, tech, and best practices in designing and carrying out processes. You can get more certifications to show off if you want, or go ahead and up your in-job skills. Whichever you choose, enhancing what you can do can only make you that much more valuable. And adding some advanced, senior-level skills could mean coming up on the career path even faster.
