Experienced individuals may join a new company and grow under supervision, or they may act interested in learning without being truly invested in understanding the organization.

Early career professionals often bring a fresh perspective and a strong grasp of new technologies and methodologies. Their familiarity with the latest tools and trends can be instrumental in tackling modern problem-solving scenarios. They tend to be adaptable, eager to learn, and open to innovative approaches, which can drive efficiency and creativity in the workplace. Leveraging their expertise can help organizations stay competitive and responsive to change. By integrating their skills and knowledge, teams can develop more effective and forward-thinking solutions to contemporary challenges.

Later career professionals have wisdom. Typically have ‘seen a lot of movies’ Blending the new with wisdom can provide a new way of thinking and problem solving. Perhaps incorporating systems thinking with ai?

Look for mutual gain. That might mean identifying shared interests and dovetailing differing interests. Talk about any difference in interests, different beliefs, different values placed on time, different forecasts, differences in aversion to risk. It might just be that its not so much about age as it is about personal differences. Discussion will produce wise agreements amicably and efficiently.

In a cross-functional project, I witnessed the synergy between a young data analyst and a seasoned project manager. The analyst proposed a cutting-edge machine learning approach, eager to innovate. The project manager, drawing on decades of experience, foresaw integration challenges and scalability issues. The leader of a team has to be like a conductor of an orchestra. He has to combine different experiences and skills in favor of a result. It's not enough to listen to the team. The leader has to know his team. Combining bold ideas with conservative actions. In this sense, it is important that the team feels comfortable making suggestions, free from judgment. Every idea, whether from a younger mind or a more experienced one, has its importance. It may not be applicable at that time. However, it is important for the evolution of the debate.

One of the most important things to do is establish that both people in the conversation deserve respect by just the simple fact that everyone is there having the conversation in the first place. By doing this, the leader sets the tone that having tenure and more experience does not excuse the other for disregarding the other team member who has less. Likewise, having more experience and time in a career needs to be given the respect it deserves also and in both parties doing this, mutual respect can be the foundation from which the conversation can proceed.

Consistent, regular dialogue goes a long way, and is going to be more effective in the long run than a one-off meeting. The more your teams are talking, the less likely they are to form separate silos around they way they do things.

It is not a matter of "age" but instead of skill, knowledge, and sometimes the way of thinking. Nobody's voice should be unheard in a project setting. If the old hand ignores the perspective of a younger peer, it does so at the risk of being proven wrong. However, if the younger peers ignore the value of experience, this is probably a consequence of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

A challenge I see with early career professionals is that they are uncomfortable on the phone. Try working through those uncomfortable phone conversations with a later career professional until it becomes less stressful.

Two heads are better than one, especially when it comes to marketing and business decisions. I've been a part of mastermind (think-tank) groups, and the magic happens when multiple people offer different approaches and perspectives on whatever project/topic needs addressing. Someone might offer something that sparks a whole new (different) idea from someone else, and this idea can snowball into something much bigger and better. As a team you realize that a different path might be the better option. We tend to have our own opinions of what's best, but when we can quiet our inner voice and be open to other's ideas and offerings, doors will open to new opportunities you didn't think or consider possible.

I have had better outcomes highlighting the differences in each stage and providing a safe space for both individuals to present how and why they did things differently then mediate to find a bridge to working together without clashing. They solve the problems, I mediate.

This is not complicated, it is in fact quite simple. it is not easy for most people, and it is simple. Respect, courtesy, and an open mind on the part of all parties is all that is needed. If you have been hired fresh out of college or graduate school, when you start that first real career job, be humble for awhile. You have twenty years of experience and 15 in this company? The new kid with his fancy degree may not be as smart as they think they are, and they are not stupid and may have a few things to teach you. You've been there 15 years, help the kid help the company, most especially if there is profit sharing or they hand out bonuses.
