It is one of the good techniques to get started. I have seen the biggest mistake is ignoring soft skills or missing them completely. It's a team effort so you need diverse skills & characters so don't skip one side or another. Many times there might be hidden skills so set up a safe & open space where they can feel comfortable sharing. Retrospective notes are very helpful during the project execution.
