In my opinion , with all ssds and nvme in trend now , we can gain a lot on from compression in terms of capacity savings. Specially those vdi workloads , dedup and compression can give you an actual 7:1 to 9:1 .. .. an adhoc mixed workload with dedup and compression would give you 3:1 ... but remember its always best to not mix your data serving cpu with compression cpu .... a seperate dedicated cpu for compression and dedup is always preferable. Also dedup and compression will have significant performance degradation on slower disk technology.

Almost all Storage vendors ( onprem ), Cloud providers offer Tiered Storage which is a good option to take advantage of and will benefit Business owners by spending less on data that needs to be archived over heavily used data, which can stay on a high performance disks. Depending on your Tier architecture, take advantage of Storage Tiering and scale your data across multiple backed disks that could be NVMe, Prem SSD, SSD, Spinning drives.

Tiering is another concept to reduce cost where data is migrated to cheaper less performing tier if it becomes cold aka less used data.... Most storages these days support tiering and you can take advantage of it. Also you can now use cloud cold tier with onprem storage to tier data that is less used....
