Making a connection with the hiring manager or individual interviewing you has always helped me. For instance, if your first interview is over the phone and you notice the number the interviewer is using to call you has an area code from your hometown or somewhere special you lived, use that as an ice breaker and way to connect with them. Or if in conversation you happen to mention similar experiences or interests (either professional or personal), use that as an opportunity to make a connection. It's little things like this that set your interview apart from all the rest. They're likely to remember you more if they can remember having a specific connection with you.
