Remember, not everyone loves all food. Something that is delicious for a lot of people, will be disgusting to others. Just because a joke falls flat with one audience, doesn't mean it won't work with other audiences. The biggest difference is made when you are able to stay confident and recognize that it is not a reflection of you - it is simply an audience who doesn't find the humor in it, or is not comfortable enough to laugh yet. you can always point out that it was a joke, or do a meta-joke where you joke about the joke not working - often these can be funnier and get more laughter than the joke itself, if you are confident and play it right.
