You're working on a data architecture project. What are some common conflicts that could arise?

The first conflict I see is that people can't even agree on where 'Data Architecture' is about, 'what concerns' we even want to architect. As in: -Some organizations see Data Architecture as something purely technical -Some Organisations confuse data architecture with solutions architecture -Some Organisations see it as a synonym for Information Architecture -Some think it's only about data modelling As such, the first question to ask could be: -What do we actually mean with data architecture? -What are we architecting? -What not? -How does it overlap with addditional architecture abstraction levels (business, information ,application, technology) ...and then move on from this Oh, and doing 'Data Architecture' is NOT a project LinkedIn!

Propose multiple design approaches that cater to the stakeholders’ requirements, and include RAIDs (Risk, Assumption, Information, and Dependency) for each of the proposals. Cost and time are the main factors that can be used as differentiators to discuss and gain buy-in from the stakeholders.

Aligning stakeholder expectations in data projects is crucial. Business users desire quick data access, engineers prioritize performance, and analysts focus on quality. Clear, frequent communication by data architects is essential to bridge these gaps, understanding each stakeholder's needs. A seasoned architect ensures business requirements are well-understood and relayed to the tech team. Open-mindedness to alternative solutions allows for optimized outcomes. Balancing trade-offs and fostering understanding among all parties are key to successful data architecture projects.

Data modeling, defines the structure and management of data. It's a blend of art and science, shaped by principles from pioneers like E.F. Codd and Chris Date. Their work establishes enduring truths in data organization—emphasizing relationships and integrity. Yet, as data architecture evolves, choosing between relational, dimensional, or NoSQL models becomes crucial. Each has its merits, tailored to specific data types and use cases. Balancing these models requires a deep understanding of foundational principles and modern needs. By integrating timeless concepts with contemporary approaches, architects can design data systems that are both robust and flexible, ensuring effective data management in a dynamic landscape.

Data security, crucial yet often overlooked, balances protection with performance. Encrypting data boosts security but may hike costs and impact speed. Anonymization safeguards privacy but can diminish utility. Architects must navigate these trade-offs, assessing risks and adhering to regulations, while implementing and auditing security measures. The lack of engagement reflects a broader issue: security's complexity and the hesitancy to assume responsibility. The important factor is growing data and finding insights beyond noise in the data is very challenging and at the same time articulating the value of non traditional data sources and the value/ perspective that brings into the decision making process . Identifying right non traditional data sources at the organization level rather than individual areas of organizational is really challenging in terms of defining business value. Also defining which level is the right balance to leverage those sources of data. Other interesting aspect is to reduce processing and storage waste by leveraging Gen-AI to extract specific business case needs and integrate them with structured data warehouse. This could be game changer for traditional businesses.
