You're overseeing a team of athletes. How can you ensure their needs are met through effective communication?

Communication starts with trust. Trust starts by listening, 1-1 and getting to know your individual athlete. go back to their childhood, understand their dreams. get underneath what makes them move and why they started playing in the first place. Share pieces about you too, by demonstrating this vulnerability, you show them they can be too.

Practice active listening during conversations with your athletes. This involves giving them your full attention, acknowledging their feelings, and responding supportively. It's important not only to hear what is being said but also to understand the underlying emotions and concerns. Show empathy towards your athletes by understanding and validating their feelings and experiences. This attitude helps build trust and strengthens the coach-athlete relationship. When athletes feel understood and supported, they are more likely to engage in open communication. Create a judgment-free environment where athletes feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns without fear of criticism

I find it pertinent to know why each member of my team is there. Having an active conversation outside of crunch time is essential. 1) What were the motivations to start initially and are those motivations still true. 2) Are these motivations internal or external. This is especially pertinent when someone has been doing something for a few years. It’s often perpetuated from habit and not always from actual desire to be there. Sometimes the flame died a few years back and getting them to either re-ignite it or acknowledge its extinction can help move the team forward. When you know each persons motivations, you can incorporate them as reminders when you connect and engage with your team.

One of the most valuable strategies I have found as a coach and manager is to spend 1-2 minutes with individuals as often as possible. It's a tremendous opportunity to feel out any potential problems, and help athletes understand that communication is welcome and productive. It's easy to say that there is open communication. Actually facilitating it demonstrates that there is action behind the words.

One of the most underrated and underappreciated assets for athletes is a safe space. Athletes often avoid discussing their business in public, so having a safe space allows them the freedom to express themselves openly and honestly. This environment is essential for fostering trust and communication. Another crucial asset is observation. One of the most effective ways to gather feedback is by observing athletes' behaviours and reactions. Much of the feedback needed can be gleaned from their actions, revealing whether they agree or disagree with implemented structures and changes. This observational feedback is invaluable for making real-time adjustments and ensuring that the athletes' needs and concerns are addressed effectively.

The best way to cultivate a thriving culture through feedback or otherwise is to first understand the various cultures that exist on your team. Also understand that everyone communicates and process information differently. When assessing feedback consider the old saying "read between the lines". I have an exercise that I created for college students to identify cultural differences by geography (city, states, countries, rural or urban), gender (gender preferences), traditions, and others identifiers. Understanding the cultures of your team and how best to work with individuals through teaming will build success on and off the field.
