Short-term wins should always be part of a "building block" towards the long-term goals. It should be made clear how any short-term win aligns to the long term goal. If they are not then either the short-term win needs to be re-evaluated or there is a need to adjust the long-term strategy. When long-term goals are set, they should also be set with a number of milestone / short term goals that would lead to the achievement of the long-term goals, detailing the how and why. These should be the priorities, and focussing on these would set the baseline for progression.

Short-term wins are key to successful attainment of the longer-term goals. By breaking the longer-term goals into bite-sized pieces and celebrating the small wins, you gain momentum through a sense of accomplishment and progress.

Communicating and reiterating the long-term vision is crucial. It ensures that everyone in the organization/project is aligned to the true north star, preventing the loss of sight while executing short-term tasks. It is absolutely necessary to focus on the short term wins. All you need to ensure is your short term goals are aligned to your long term vision. Another important strategic element is to keep revisiting the long-term vision based on the changes in the eco-system your business operates in.

Setting achievable goals. You cant align your vision to your business by trying to outperform. But if you’re not able to achieve wins and still maintain a clear vision you’re likely not aligning your goals to your vision. Goals help you stay focused and be more clear of your vision. There is also research of smaller goals being able to have a more positive psychological effect and be able to achieve bigger aspirations long-term.

Without key indicators to drive our actions, it's impossible to define success or to recalibrate in real-time the actions needed to reach our goals. The analogy I like to use is that of a 100m sprint: if you don't measure your time at each phase and overall, you can't improve, evolve, or reach your objective. From my experience, executing on a day to day towards key results, will accumulate and get us to or main objectives towards our overall goals. After a while, several short term wins transform into medium term and so on. .Sometimes Tunnel Vision towards short term priorities will keep you and your team focused and translate into a big win down the line.

While talking about long-term persistence and wins what people actually forget is the essential factors required for that win. An unrelated quick win is not always bad. Here's why 1. Winning and losing are not just about tangible business impact, it's also about building up essential factors such as skills, experience, behaviors and network 2. If the short-term win results in building any of the above 4 factors, that quick win, in the end is going to contribute to your long-term winning. 3. Your reflection after the quick win must evaluate, along with other factors, the development/progress of these factors as well.

The most important thing is to have fluid communication and to share this vision with peers to gain a comprehensive perspective. Elements that have helped in using short-term tasks towards long-term strategy are prioritizing versatility and underestimation. Firstly, coming to terms with the fact that tasks, which I thought would serve as direct progress to my goal, may not work and/or branch into "sub-tasks." For example, maybe a revenue stream I deemed profitable has a operability challenge to address before it's realistic. Secondly, a conservative estimate helps in maintaining morale and being thorough in your strategy. For example, replicating samples while lab testing a product ensures reproducibility in the result, instead of trusting one test and the commercial result failing.
