Here is my perspective: 1. Stay calm. 2. Actively listen to the question. 3. Mirror the question to ensure understanding. 4. Pause to collect your thoughts. 5. If needed, take a moment to calm yourself (e.g., by discreetly dropping a pen). 6. Raise open-ended questions to understand the context better.

One thing I have found helpful when asked tough questions during a presentation is to first breathe and get composed, then throw the question back to the audience first to get their views on the topic as well whilst am putting the answers together to consolidate the discussion.

Taking a second to compose yourself while demonstrating the ability to remain calm and focused during your presentation, gives your audience a sense of confidence in your abilities. A meaningful pause in any presentation, especially while under fire, goes a long way!

One approach I adopt is to smile - it relaxes me and also makes the person who asked feel acknowledged. Clear throat, do a couple of fillers like - “you know that’s a really good question”. Sometimes, if it’s a new audience, I ask a few questions about the person like their name and appreciate the depth of the question. This will help my mind prepare the start for an answer in parallel, which most of the times it works. There have been times as well when I get flustered and completely mess it up. For those situations, I rewind it and try to find why it happened and learn for next time.

Agree. Always have to try be calm and digest the question well. There are no questions that has no answer. Each has an answer but just need to stay composed and knows well the topic you are presenting as the question usually comes from what we present or speak off.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to genuinely listen to each question. One thing that has always helped me is to make an eye contact with the questioner, let them know that you are absolutely attentive and even nod in between. This kind of body language will clearly set the tone for the response you share. This will let the audience feel that you care about their opinions/feedback and are respectful towards them. Take a brief moment to gather your thoughts and then share your response. How you deliver your message, I believe, is more important than what you verbally say!

When there are questions we can't answer right away, I've learned that being honest is the best thing to do. Understanding that we don't know everything is a sign of humility and a sign that we are real. Being honest with your audience is a great way to build trust and respect. Instead of feeling like we have to give a quick answer that might not be correct, it's much better to admit that we don't know everything and offer to get it later. This method not only keeps people interested, but it also shows that we're dedicated to giving them correct and useful information. From what I've seen, being honest like this has always been well accepted and has often led to deeper, more meaningful interactions with other people.

Besides not knowing certain things, for all of us, there are still things that we do not even know, the unknown unknown (Source: Fedex); so just admit that we don’t know and make an effort to find out more and learn from them. That's honesty.

"Fake it until you make it?" It varies based on the situation and context. Personally, I value honesty and transparency. If I feel my response wouldn't be meaningful, I prefer to admit it. It's better to revisit the topic later with proper research. It's a learning curve!

One helpful strategy is to be comfortable with vulnerability. Honestly inform your audience when you don't know the answer, and either enlist their help in figuring it out or communicate a plan for following up with them in the future.

Chances are that we will get one or more questions which may be either difficult to answer at the moment because we may not know the full answer to it, or that they deviate from the core of the topic. Either way, replying with honesty is the best. “I don’t know the answer to your question right now”, is a very powerful argument only if you connect it to: “but give us your contact information and we will follow up with you off line”. This will give you 2 advantages, the audience asking questions will be engaged because they will feel you value their comments, but will also give them extra confidence when you come back to them via separate email or phone call to resolve their questions. Providing context have always been useful for the audience who have doubts. In my past experience providing context has always helped me clear their doubts but yes this becomes time consuming. The best way is to connect with people at the end of the presentation and clear their doubts.

People like to relate to people. That's why there are so many influencers that people follow their tips. Whenever you share a personal experience, the audience can relate to you, trust more, feel closer and pay attention, creating a connection. Also, I understand better when I can see the whole context, know the person, understand the reason behind it, that's why I try to apply it for my presentations: to give context.

Never get stuck on few of the audience. Be a rotating fan kept on a table. Firm on ground but eye-contact with most of them. Some of the audience show keen interest or seem to be engaged deeply, never lose sight of them. Figure out that lot where people are chirping and the group which are attentive. Attend both of them one by one frequently. Mention the influencers genuinely through whom you have been invited or who are the impact players sitting their to note you. The mention has to be quite natural and rational.

Speaking directly to the part of the question about keeping your audience engaged, one thing that helps is giving a one line opener that’ll prepare their minds for your answer. E.g. - I’m going to answer this question with two examples… this also helps you to not ramble on -I’m going to answer this question with a story… then tell the story succinctly - I will answer this question from the perspective of … I hope this helps

Some steps 1) Prepare well -: You need to be through in the topic which you are presenting. With detailed knowledge & info about the topic you can prevent lot of tough questions. 2) Be specific while answering the questions. 3) Focus on what is the question? Rather than who is asking the question. 4) For questions which are not that relevant dodge them skillfully. 5) In case you don't know the exact answer , accept the same. No point in giving random answers. As this stops further leading questions & prevents confusion. 6) Be honest & straight forward while replying. 7) In case Sr. No. 1 to Sr. No. 6 not working use the golden rule " If you can't convince them....then confuse them! 😉"

It is always better to set the expectations right for the audience by letting them know in advance that you will be taking questions mid-way or after a certain section during the presentation or at the end of presentation. This way the flow of the presentation and your thought process will not get affected and you also don’t have to rush your way through rest of the presentation in case of time constraints.

In my experience a good opening that engages the audience and conveys a preview of the quality and soundness of the presentation we are going to share is of paramount importance. Then don't be afraid to kindly set rules: many people are impatient and ask a hundred questions yet during the executive summary, preventing an effective presentation. Ask them to let you complete your narrative, leaving questions at the end. Last tip: share your passion and positive emotions. On paper it may be the most beautiful presentation in the world, but if you don't know how to "play" it, it won't generate any interest. Play for them, not for you!
