When I first started my journey as a social work student, my employer and teachers emphasized the importance of confidentiality from day one. I remember my professor saying that for many clients, a social worker is the only person they really trust. This trust isn't just a luxury; it's essential for us to effectively carry out our work. I believe everyone should take it seriously, not only to comply with legal requirements but also to uphold trust and integrity in all relationships.

Make sure you educate and refresh your knowledge of HIPPA at least once a year. Conduct a training for colleagues and employees at least once a year to educate everyone on Confidentiality. Gather input from colleagues, supervisors, and employees on better ways to safely secure confidential information in the workplace.

Contract both yourself and the client to confidentiality as part of the information act. This provides both security and obligation as part of the legislative process

Confidentiality is a key component of the principles of social works. A proverb in Hausa language explains that "the stomach isn't just meant to store food alone, secrets and other sensitive issues of life". The client is like a drowning person who would cling to anything as a saving grace. As professionals, we are to keenly uphold their trust in us. 1. We have to be conversant with laws that pertains to Confidentiality. 2. For we to be compact and not compromise we must keep our emotions in check, one can spill the beans at a slight provocation. 3. Being non judgemental gives clients more confidence. Etc

To ensure the security of confidential information for a client, implement robust data encryption for both storage and transmission, enforce strict access controls with multi-factor authentication, and conduct regular security audits. Utilize secure, compliant storage solutions and educate employees on data security best practices. Additionally, adhere to relevant data protection regulations and have a robust incident response plan in place to quickly address any potential breaches. Collect and retain only necessary data for the required duration to minimize risk.

In my experience, it is best if practitoners use one system for safe storage of all client documents, reducing paper and emails that can add to the risk of PHI disclosure. Fully using and uploading client information to a secure electronic health records platform can take time, but you do not risk having records on personal computers, viral issues causing lost information, or exposure to costly audits or clawbacks because of flimsy records systems.
