An individual interested in transitioning into data analytics conducts informational interviews with data analysts across different industries. These conversations reveal a preference for a role focused on building data visualization dashboards to communicate insights to stakeholders.

Highlight company's potential to provide opportunities for learning aligned with their career goals. An applicant for a SE position researches the company's focus on cutting-edge technologies. They express their goal to learn these new technologies and mention the company's internal training programs as a factor in their enthusiasm for the opportunity.

Here is a script example for you: "I've always been passionate about [industry or specific field], especially after [mention personal experience or achievement]. This industry excites me because [explain what specifically motivates you, e.g., innovation, impact on society, opportunities for growth]. The [specific position] is meaningful to me because it aligns perfectly with my career aspirations. I'm particularly drawn to [mention specific aspects of the role, e.g., the opportunity to lead initiatives, collaborate with diverse teams, or use my skills in XYZ]. I believe my background in [relevant experience or skills] will allow me to contribute to [company’s name or industry] in meaningful ways.”

Confidence and communication are important. Think of an applicant for a customer service role who practices their interview responses beforehand. They use "I" statements to confidently express their career goal of becoming a customer service manager and their passion for building positive client relationships. Encourage clients to ask insightful questions about career development opportunities within the company. An applicant for a sales role inquires about potential mentorship programs or leadership development initiatives offered by the company. This showcases their ambition and desire to grow within the organization.

I invite my clients to think about their career goals and vision 3,5 and 10 years from now as part of their pre-work before an interview. Some will have it crystal clear while others struggle to surpass the 3 years and that is OK! Be honest and say "From the experiences and interests I have today I see myself doing/achieving X in 3 years. And I guess the new experiences I will gain in this role, plus the changes we will see in this industry/thematic area in the upcoming years will provide clues to define what's next. I believe that clarity comes from action and exploration and I would love to learn and contribute to the work you do in this organization". How does this approach feel for you?
