Your team is divided on sustainability efforts. How can you unite them towards a greener future?

From my experience, one of the best ways to unite a team around a common vision is to bring them together. If you are looking to coalesce a team around a sustainability strategy, ensure they 1) understand how the strategy is core to their organization's mission, 2) show them the economic, social and environmental benefits and 3) ensure they understand how important their role is to making it all possible. Then, I highly recommend spending some quality time outdoors connecting with each other and nature as a reminder of why this work is so important. Research shows spending time in nature and interacting at a deeper level can be a catalyst for team growth and productivity by fostering creativity, cohesion and resilience.

Cost benefit modelling is the go-to tool for comparing returns on sustainability investment. For example, the best way to compare net zero pathways and its allied cost is to undertake a Marginal Abatement Cost Curve assessment which considers cost and benefits across its lifecycle. A MACC usually presents the costs or savings expected from different opportunities, alongside the potential volume of emissions that could be reduced if implemented.

Uniting a divided team on sustainability efforts involves clear communication and collaborative planning. Start by facilitating an open discussion to understand different viewpoints and concerns. Highlight the long-term benefits of sustainability for the organisation and its stakeholders. Present data and case studies to show successful sustainability initiatives. Develop a shared vision and set common goals that everyone can agree on. Encourage team participation in creating action plans, ensuring their input is valued. Regularly communicate progress and celebrate small wins to maintain motivation. By fostering inclusivity and transparency, you can align your team towards a common sustainability vision.

Assessing a view could be done similar to a ''Myers Briggs'' questionnaire in order to establish the different views on sustainability. From there you could determine what topics around sustainability or common and which are not. As a next step, you could consider a workshop around sustainability and measures you are thinking of implementing. During the workshop you could gather inside on people's opinion and from there start creating a common roadmap. By keeping people from your team involved, and ensure that there is a transparent way on how to report on progress, you can keep people inspired on working towards a more sustainable future as a team.

In navigating sustainability initiatives within a corporate environment characterized by diverse age demographics, understanding team perspectives is foundational. These objectives should embody the SMART criteria—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. You can encourage your team to pursue these goals. However, I would include a form of gamification in order to (1) keep track of progress and (2) reward behavior which can positively contribute to the SMART goals. For SMART goals it is important to agree on a methodology on how to report and measure results and include timing on when and how results are being reported on.

The goals have to be defined by KPI's. Now these KPI's can be SMART but not necessarily. However, they have to match the Views; i.e., Material Topics.

Rewards and recognition are the first step. It's good to encourage ideas which can lead to further success. But remember, celebrate consciously.

The key thing to consider in all efforts relating to sustainability is what the core goal is. That's the Brundtland definition of sustainability "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Ensure visible support and commitment from leadership towards sustainability goals to inspire confidence and alignment among team members. Consider offering incentives or rewards for innovative green ideas and exemplary contributions towards sustainability, reinforcing a culture of engagement and initiative. Foster collaboration across departments or teams to leverage diverse skills and perspectives towards shared sustainability objectives, promoting a holistic approach.

When working as a team, it is important to collaborate in an open and transparent way. I could recommend using technology in order to help determine SMART goals and gather ideas (AI can be used), allow measurement of actions taken and allow for a transparent way of reporting.
