What do you do if you're missing out on industry trends despite executive coaching?

It is very important that the Coach does not create a dependency mindset for the Client, but rather should encourage the Client to be independent and curious. The Coach will help the Client to stay up to date with trends by referring them to sources of knowledge ( e.g. LinkedIn, Get Abstract, Blinkist etc..) but the Client must accept responsibility for their continuing development. Independence and confidence are the is the best outcomes of coaching.

I always try to stay up to date. I dedicate a good part of my professional life to studying, lectures, training courses and updating events. One of the great positive points of the internet also is the fact that knowledge is available to everyone. Obviously, it's important to know where to look. Another strong point for updating yourself is exchanging experiences with professionals in the sector. It is important to know that there is always a lot to learn and that this is part of the life and training of any professional in all areas.

Despite coaching, getting updated on a weekly basis about the trends in your industry is critical if you want to grow your company

To assess gaps I find it helpful to reflect on coaching focus—leadership vs. industry trends. Align sessions with your needs. Request Specific Focus: Talk to your coach about industry trends. Seek targeted sessions. Personal Research: Read industry pubs, follow leaders online, attend webinars. Active Networking: Engage peers for insights on trends. Cross-functional Projects: Gain broad industry perspective. Feedback Loop: Get input on trend knowledge. Continuous Learning: Stay updated with ongoing effort. Consider New Coach@!!: Find industry-savvy coach if needed.

Be part of an active and engaged community of fellow professionals- with who you have much in common, but which is also diverse enough to bring you information, perspectives, and opportunities that you are unlikely to find elsewhere.

The coach is the best judge of how to help you. If you identify your shortfalls, it is very important to take steps to improve on those areas. So an experienced mentor or coach can definitely help you transform yourself and approach life with a positive image and a successful personality.b

I think a coach could be very helpful here in helping the executive devise a plan; however, if the coach is also a business psychologist, there is an opportunity to contract more broadly and gain some of the wider information listed through psychoeducation. Making the coaching part of a wider leadership development programme is an even better solution and one which I very much advocate for in my practice.

Learning happens in a more active manner and when you are engaging with others. I have found that when I interact with anyone in the industry proactively, there is definitely a takeaway and understanding of trends. Hence it is important to have multiple sources of learning active. The network that you have built also becomes useful to use as things start changing for you.

Being able to provide clients with referrals to other industry experts is a win/win/win scenario. Your client connects with other helpful professionals; those professionals appreciate your referrals and will often make an effort to reciprocate; and you continue to build your reputation as a coach with excellent contacts and networks.

Mein größtes Learning hinsichtlich NETZWERKE ist, nicht (nur) die direkten Kontakte zu sehen, sondern die Kontakte derer zu kennen. Auch meine Mandanten und Mandantinnen sind immer wieder überrascht, nachdem Sie ihr NETZWERK einmal professionell sondiert und aktiviert haben, welche positiven Auswirkungen dies hat. Die Standardfrage "...wenn du mal was hörst, sag Bescheid..." o.ä. ist damit nicht gemeint.

This is but obvious (maybe not always so!). One's formal and informal networks are powerful sources of information and Knowledge about what is the latest in the industry. It is humanly not possible to read, be clued into and stay updated on everything directly from all the original sources. But the power of peer and social learning kicks into play here when one gets the updates through such channels. Our brand gets created by this stage ot one's career. Each person is known for their expertise and thought leadership in a given area. Hence, it is easier to tap into that expertise to learn from others. One would also be approached similarly by others for one's own area(s) of expertise.

Like a doctor or any professional practitioner, it's essential to continuously evaluate and improve your methods to effectively impact your clients. Just as you expect a doctor to stay updated on the latest treatments, as a coach, you must also keep learning to support your clients' personal and professional journeys. Regularly reading the latest books, research, and attending webinars is crucial. Revisiting workshops can refresh your skills, ensuring you stay aligned with best practices. Consistent learning broadens your knowledge and enhances your ability to positively influence others. This dedication to self-improvement and accountability is a hallmark of a professional coach, driving meaningful change in yourself and others.

Why stop at asking your coach?! Becoming part of peer networks, ask mentors and experts e.g. through LinkedIn but ensure that your learning is evidence-based to avoid getting caught up on the latest fad.

Though this article mixes the concept of coaching and consulting, continuous learning is always a great idea! Business consulting should be more niche and require you to stay up on industry trends and constantly perform market analysis so that you are providing the right consulting to your clients. Coaching on the other hand is agnostic to industry, in most cases. Coaches should stay up on the latest trends and tools to help your clients perform better self assessments and to help make progress in a methodical way. Coaching gets at the heart if understanding behaviors in a person, while consulting can diagnose what's happening within an organization and industry.

STRATEGISCHES EXPERIMENTIEREN ist heutzutage unabdingbar, wenn der Wunsch nach Gestalten existiert. Es erfordert Mut und das Geschick, den Grad zwischen Standardprozessen/-methoden für sich und die jeweilige Organisation zu wählen. Ein positives Beispiel ist dabei für mich 3M, die dies bereits seit Jahrzehnten in ihrer Firmenkultur verankert haben (Stichwort: Innovationsmanagement).

The coach doesn't necessary need to know the industry trends, but they should be able to challenge you and help you bounce ideas. Find together areas where it would be worth it to explore further. Then reach out to coworkers inside and outside tour company and industry, attend industry events and webinars, read new books on the topic and come back to your coach with questions and challenges to solve together.

Continue to be curious. If your needs are not being met, make your concerns known. If you have identified areas/gaps then let your coach know. A good coach will adapt and course correct. If they don’t then it’s okay to provide feedback and seek alternatives.

D 'après mon expérience, il est important d'Être spécifique et concret dans les commentaires pour permettre au coaché de comprendre précisément ce qui doit être amélioré. Être constructif en mettant en avant les points forts du coaché tout en identifiant les domaines à travailler. Être régulier et constant pour assurer une évolution continue et un ajustement des actions.

Expect more from yourself & your coach! Reflect on your learning style and how you assimilate information. Coaching complements but does not replace, proactive effort! Engage actively in industry groups, forums, and LinkedIn communities—to yield fresh insights. Allocate regular time slots for reading industry reports, journals, and news. Consistency is key. Use tools like Feedly, Google Alerts, and industry-specific apps to stay updated without overwhelming yourself. Follow and interact with thought leaders on platforms like YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn. They often discuss emerging trends. Discuss these trends with your coach. Seek their perspective on integrating these trends into your daily work and learning. Be Active! Own it!

Das #ICF - Verständnis von Coaching beinhaltet leider keine Fachberatung. Wenn eine Unterstützung in Bezug auf Branchentrends gewünscht wird - dann ist das - zumindest dem Österreichischen Verständnis nach- der Wunsch nach Unternehmensberatung. Aber natürlich verschwimmen hier die Grenzen ab und zu. Jedenfalls sollte diese Frage Teil der Auftragsklärung sein, damit die Erwartungshaltungen auf beiden Seiten klar sind.

Work with the coach in establishing a clear learning and growth agenda for yourself. The coach is the accountability partner. But actions need to be taken by oneself. I have shared above under ongoing learning what all can be done. For those actions, when factored into the plan, the coach will work with you on review progress, holding you accountable and extracting relevant learning (about self). In my experience, the hungrier one is for growth, the more coaching delivers for you. Coaching sessions last 60 to 120 minutes, perhaps once or twice a month. But what do you choose to do beyond that? The actual actions happen in the time beyond. Coaching provides a space for reflection, clarification, challenge, consolidation, and insight.

Things move incredibly fast especially trends. I suggest creating feeds that help you see what is happening and keep it separate from everything else. That way you do not feel overloaded. Then as number five Strategic Experimentation suggests try some things out. Coaches can be great sounding boards so you can discuss both the trends and what is or is not working for you in your strategic experimentations.

What I’ve seen work is to start to assess your current coaching approach and ensure it includes a focus on staying abreast of industry developments. Regularly seek feedback from your coach and incorporate their insights into your learning and development plan. Actively participate in industry events, webinars, and online forums to stay informed about emerging trends. Leverage your coach as a sounding board to discuss industry news and its potential impact on your organization. Encourage your coach to challenge your assumptions and provide fresh perspectives on industry trends. Additionally, consider seeking specialized coaching in industry-specific topics to gain a deeper understanding of the latest developments.
