When it comes to mentoring junior colleagues, sharing expertise can greatly accelerate their development. The hands-on experience of working with real problems develops know-how that is not obtained in courses or in the academic environment. This know-how about what to do and what not to do will be valuable in guiding colleagues’ learning.

Learning from the past and share it. Day by day working as Data Eng make you found new case and new shortcut to solve it also. In my experience, I wrote a documentation in some project management apps (Trello) and project versioning apps (GitHub). In this way you just assign them to see our documentation. This way also help for project hand-over.

By acting as a mentor to a junior colleague on your team, you can suggest development points and set goals together. It is very important that goals are challenging but achievable, stimulating development while generating a sense of progress. Also, be sure to make yourself available to provide guidance if necessary.

Giving feedback to a colleague is an art. When setting up a feedback routine with your mentee, reinforce positive skills whenever possible. Be careful when pointing out flaws and opportunities for improvement, when doing so ensure you are respectful and have a suggestion on how to improve or which path to take. Be empathetic and have your colleague's development as the focus of the conversation.

Data analytics is an area of constant evolution. Therefore, when you are mentoring someone, think about technical and business aspects that are part of your mentee's daily life. Suggest courses or books on new technologies. Suggest that the mentee seek a quick chat with other team members, to better understand other departments and business problems.

One of the best forms of learning is hands-on learning. Ensure that your mentee is primarily responsible for at least one project, this will develop a sense of ownership and consequently soft skills, when needing to defend and explain the project. Let the mentee make technical and business decisions about the project, but stay close to provide some guidance if necessary.

In my opinion, I believe that an effective mentoring process must always be centered on the mentee. Through respectful guidance and feedback, the mentor must be able to accelerate the development of hard and soft skills, ensuring that the mentee has a correct understanding of the business problem and is using the correct techniques to solve them, with autonomy.
